Niall's debut album is pure perfection, its such a confort theme full of a mix with sad and upbeat songs, also more slowed songs (which i love), It gives me confort, it makes me happy. His lyrics are pure and real, he deserved more credit because its amazing! a perfect start for an amazing artist

I loved it. I'm not going to review this album from a "does it distinguish itself among the masterpieces of pop" perspective, because I'm not arrogant enough to judge what a masterpiece of pop music would be. All I can say is that at a personal level this album touched me deeply, both lyrically and melodically. So, for my own reaction to this album, I've giving it a 10.

Flicker's one of those albums that you put on repeat on a gloomy day and let it soothe you. Of course it's not perfect, but who is? And why would you expect him to be?
Because of the whole 1D thing people tend to forget how young he is, and that this is his first solo album. If you take that into account, it's a pretty damn great debut. Well done, Nialler!

On the Loose- One of my favorite tracks; Niall warns others about a woman who enjoys leading lovers on and the attention she receives from it. He keeps the lyrics respectful and seems to have a certain level of admiration for her. This is one of those songs that has you nodding along without you even noticing. Perfect opening track. 9/10

This Town- An acoustic driven track, Niall sings about the love he still has for a childhood lover. While the song is sweet enough, it lacks a spark. Since Niall’s vocals appear to be at the spotlight for this track, it’d have been better if he played with some of the words or sung with a bit more passion. Overall, the song is pleasant, but it doesn’t leave an impact. 7/10

Seeing Blind- A collaboration with country-artist Maren Morris, she and Niall sing about being surprised that someone who appeared to be out of their league is showing interest to them. The lyrics are simple yet sweet and their voices fit perfectly alongside each others. Their emotion is definitely what makes this song enjoyable and lively. 8.5/10

Slow Hands- A surprising hit, Niall puts a twist on the typical club one night stand. This time it’s the woman who is making the first move, telling him they should “take this back to [her] place.” The lyrics aren’t anything special but alongside the infectious beat, they do quite well. 9/10

Too Much To Ask- A heartbreaking post-breakup ballad, Niall] sings about hoping his lost love will return to him. You can hear the passion and hope he still has in his voice and it’s definitely a song that has you swaying along. 8.5/10

Paper Houses- Probably my favorite track from the whole album; Nialls sings about a relationship that from the very beginning was weak and set to not work out and it did just that. I’ve read some reviews who had a large distaste for the lyrics but personally I love the imagery. Also, how the drums break into the music is absolutely beautiful and captures my attention right away. The music production plus the passion he sings with makes this song come alive and feel like a journey, it makes you feel his pain. 10/10

Since We’re Alone- Yet another one of my favorite tracks; Niall is aware of this woman’s problems and he makes it clear that he has no bad intentions; he reassures her that he is there to help her. With the aid of the background vocals and Niall’s sweet tone, this song becomes one you listen to while your driving in your car at night with the windows down. 10/10

Flicker- The title track of the album, it certainly did not disappoint. Niall sings about a failing relationship; he is clinging onto the last bit of hope they have left even though they both know that their relationship us coming to an end. I remember Niall saying that this track could have been easily under-produced or easily over-produced so he made sure the producers treated it with care and I feel as if he achieved what he was aiming for. It’s a very delicate yet grand song. You can see the desperation he has in the lyrics and overall it’s a beautiful and honest song. 10/10

Fire Away- Niall is letting his lover know that they can share their problems with him, even though he might not understand them, he’ll try to help. His sweet vocals create a calming tone throughout the song and the toned down music doesn’t overpower the simplicity of the song. It’s a nice song to have playing in the background when you want to get some work done or you’re feeling stressed. 8/10

You & Me- Niall reassures his lover that even though they might be overcoming problems, that everything will be okay at the end. This track may be one of my favorites simply because of the chorus, both the lyrics and the way he delivers it shows a sort of passion that automatically captures my attention. 8.5/10

On My Own- A let-loose type of song, Niall sings about not wanting to be in a relationship and rather preferring being on his own. While I didn’t enjoy it at first listen, experiencing energy he has when he performs it really made it grow on me. 8/10

Mirrors- Another one of my favorites; Niall sings about a woman who’s lonely and struggling with problems. I’m so disappointed with the fact that this song isn’t part of the standard edition. I feel as if this is what most critics were looking for in the standard version and while I enjoyed all of the standard tracks, I also believe it lacked a bit of color that this song could have helped deliver. 10/10

The Tide- Possibly my second top favorite track; Niall uses “the tide” to represent something that is pulling him and his lover’s relationship apart. He desperately warns them that it’s coming. I really love the symbolism in the lyrics and the passion he delivers throughout the song. My only small complaint is that this feels like an opening track rather than a closing one. 10/10

There is clearly so much heart and soul that's been poured into it, and I can literally feel the pain/joy/love that he was clearly feeling while writing the songs. The thing that excites me most about this album is the fact that his fanbase (which is notoriously young girls) is going to have an album full of beautiful music with depth and feeling, not just your typical run of the mill pop hits coming from other teen heartthrobs. This is a excellent album from Niall Horan. Incredibly impressive that it is the artist's debut album on his own. Artfully done album by the only member of One Direction that seems to know who they are. Horan keeps in touch with his musical roots with this emotional and brilliantly cohesive album. Horan doesn't use any gimmicks; he doesn't change his image or musical style to impress or push away from his boyband reputation. He does not follow in the footsteps of Zayn or Harry Styles (or even the other two members who are still working on their solo albums) who seemed to change completely overnight upon entering their solo careers. No, Horan sticks to his guns, and in a way, in this world where everyone tries too hard to be the next cultural hot topic, is very admirable.

This album tells a somber story of love that did not have a happy ending, which is strangely refreshing in it's soft, sometimes melancholy, sometimes vibrant, tones. Tracks like "Since We're Alone" and "Flicker" contain gorgeous vocals. "Fire Away" is, simply, the sweetest, most stripped down song of 2017. "On My Own" is certainly the most memorable song, with it's mountain-man drinking song vibes. "Slow Hands" is the poppiest song on this more folksy sounding album, and it's use prevents the album from sounding too monotonous.

A lot of the songs sound far better live, which is truly saying something, since most of the studio versions already sound so complete. The first track, "On the Loose" is a good example of a song that should be heard live first.

I believe that Horan has a good career ahead of him. There is absolutely no need to be so experimental on one's first album, and I applaud him for his honestly; not just lyrically, but musically and image-wise. As I said, Horan knows who he is and simply wants to share that in this album. If that means he's not "pushing any envelopes", why fault him?

I have been listening toI fully admit to rolling my eyes whenever I heard anything about One Direction over the years, being a little past the age of boy bands. That being said, I was surprised a few months ago when I finally heard "This Town" on the radio and thought it absolutely lovely. Then "Slow Hands" came out and again, I was surprised that this came from a member of One Direction. I have been listening to some of his live performances on his Flicker Sessions and liked enough of what I heard that I purchased his album when it came out the other day. I have never been more pleasantly surprised in my life by an artist. You can tell a lot of thought and care when into the lyrics and you can hear the influences of some of the best bands like Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles in the melodies and instruments. What easily could have been an overproduced pop/R&B album that seems to be the norm, he has gone a more honest and simple route, one that isn't influenced by cliches or recent trends that can easily become dated. I am not an easy person to please when it comes to music selections, preferring to make my own playlists with my own choices rather than relying on what others put together, but I can honestly say that I have not enjoyed an album and all the songs on it like I have "Flicker" for the longest time. While all the songs are good, there are a few for me that stand out. "On the Loose" is quite the bop, reminding me of classic Fleetwood Mac in some ways. "Seeing Blind" with Maren Morris is a lovely and lighthearted duet that has the potential to be a crossover hit with country and contemporary charts. "On My Own" has become my own personal anthem, registering with me in ways no other song has before, with a bit of an irish flair to it. This is one I can see people singing in pubs and keeping on over time. "Flicker", "Fire Away" and "You and Me" bring out a bittersweet feeling in me that I can't explain. His lyrics brilliantly paint a picture of heartache and hope for a relationship that's maybe not quite over yet. And ofcourse, his singles "This Town", "Slow Hands" and "Too Much to Ask" are great and show a range in the young singer that not many can pull off. I have seen some reviews on here, giving a low score for one reason or another, mostly as people try to compare him with Ed Sheeran or write him off because he was in a boyband, Respectfully, I must disagree wholeheartedly with those critics and ask that anyone who has not heard his album to keep an open mind. I did and I have listened to this album more times than I care to admit this past week. While he may not be the strongest vocalist in comparison to some other current male artists, his voice is very pleasant and suits the music he makes as well as evokes emotions that other artists can't. He has grown up alot since being a "boybander" and I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. Expand

I’m giving Niall Horan’s debut album a solid 10 because it is one of the best albums I’ve listened to in a very long time. The lyrics are very well written. I hope this is just one of many more albums to come.

Going into listening to Flicker for the first time i knew that i had to like at least some of the songs because i had already heard This Town, Slow Hands, and Too Much To Ask and i found each to be better than the last. i was not disappointed, not only that but i was very shocked by each song and how poetic and revealing i found the lyrics. Niall's voice is very strong and beautiful throughout each song. The instrumental aspect of the album was always either very beautiful and soothing, or strong and exciting. i enjoyed the lyrics from each song and that they each spoke a story that had no gimmicks behind it. Songs like Mirrors - where i heard that Niall said himself was about young women who have real struggles and him wanting to let them know that they are not alone - to songs like Fire Away - where he sings about letting his partner know that he is there and he will respect her wanting to keep her distance and that he will listen, even if he doesn't understand, because he cares - to On My Own - which was a very rocky song about enjoying his own company and simply being more than okay on his own. Each song spoke to me and got me excited in very different ways. Some like the title track of the album, Flicker, were tear-inducing. Even The Tide, which may have been masked as an up-beat song, but had lyrics of fearing a loved one leaving, caused me to cry. This album is not only beautiful, but it's true and inspiring. Flicker has by far proven to be my favorite album to date. I've grown up on so many different music categories (from rap to country to rock to pop, I've listened to it all) and i have to say, no other album has made me feel the way this one does. Kudos to Mr. Niall Horan. i can't wait to see what else he has in store, and i definitely recommend that you take a listen for yourself of you haven't already. Expand

As far as "Flicker" as a whole - I think the album realistically deserves a 8.5 (I rounded up and gave an 9). It's a good album. Very cohesive. It's easy to listen to and there are some really nice gems - my favorites being On the Loose, Slow Hands, Too Much to Ask, Flicker and surprisingly, though I don't care for country music, I really enjoy the duet with Maren Morris "Seeing Blind". Really good album. I was surprised by his songwriting as we unfortunately didn't hear a lot of it in 1d. All the songs go together and provide a beautiful and human story. Niall's vocals are good and exactly what I was expecting from him, I hope we'll get a few more bold choices on that side on nh2. But an overall great autumn album. This is a cohesive exploration of an often-times fragile relationship that ended in eventual dissolution. I think the mostThis is a cohesive exploration of an often-times fragile relationship that ended in eventual dissolution. You can physically feel and hear his earnest pleas to his lover, you can hear him try to process what happened, and from a rather adult point of view. I think this is particularly clear on "Fire Away" which is about helping handle the emotional labor of your partner. I think the most striking lyrics and imagery on the album come from "The Tide" which uses the metaphor of the tide coming in to describe the anxious and fearful feeling that your relationship is on shaky ground and you know what's coming. I particularly like when Niall takes on that style - where his voice is grittier and slightly more rocky than his more folk-inspired song (This Town, Paper Houses) but each have a place in this album. His influences are clear without being carbon copies. You pick up on the Fleetwood Mac inspiration but it's reinterpreted and updated in such a way that makes it feel like a throwback in a modern way. I think Niall has room to improve going forward - perhaps varying the sound a bit (I do think there are a few too many slower, quieter songs in a row) but it's clear he has an artistic vision and knows what he wants to do, and I think that's more than half the battle for any artist. He is only going to hone his sound with time. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and leave your pre-conceived notions at the door. Give "On The Loose" a try. Give "Since We're Alone" a try. Give "On My Own" and "Mirrors" a try. And if all else fails, put "Slow Hands" on repeat. You may not enjoy the entire album, but try to deny that song. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to. Expand
