In the end, what makes The Foley Room Tobin's best album in seven years is the way his bent for organized chaos manifests as a deft control of every sound that surrounds him: Anything's a beat, everything's a break, and the difference between sound and music is entirely contextual.
-
A smooth, natural progression from Supermodified.
-
The overall sound of The Foley Room is unquestionably Tobin's, even though it sounds like a step forward rather than a re-tread.
-
In concept (and on the accompanying DVD), The Foley Room is a heck of an idea and meticulous in production and sound. Musically, though, the end result isn't the best work from Tobin.
-
A fascinating work of collage that never gets tedious or faddy.
-
The album has plenty of stirring moments, but it falls short of being truly engulfing with its sound.
-
Foley Room might be his darkest work yet.
-
Give Tobin credit for shaking things up, but Foley Room is more an example that proves he should stick to his strengths and go back to the vinyl-filled crates for material.
-
Despite all the ingenuity on Foley Room, it’s hard for me not to miss the days when Tobin belonged as much to jazz as he did to any electronic genre.
