This strange summer of arrested development is steadily ending. Folklore will endure long beyond it: as fragmented as Swift is across her eighth album – and much as you hope it doesn’t mark the end of her pop ambitions – her emotional acuity has never been more assured.

What Folklore ultimately achieves in its narrative of escapism is reinforcing the notion that Swift isn’t one of the greatest twenty-first century artists because her work is autobiographical, or because she leaves cleverly crafted clues leading up to her albums (although these are all interesting elements) but rather because she is, first and foremost, a storyteller. The lyrics are so magnificently written, it’s shocking how instantly it touches listeners just on the first play. However, there is more to this exceptionally, arguably flawless LP. As many have pointed out, Swift’s lyricism is quite different from her previous albums coming out of the 2010s. Artists in the contemporary music scene are constantly trying to change their image and sound. It is not atypical for someone like Swift to escape back to her nostalgic, euphoric, and aesthetically pleasing folk sound of the early to late 2000s. At first glance, ‘Folklores’ tracklist is what you would expect from a traditional Taylor Swift album. Though, as you delve deeper into the meaning of distinct songs and the lyrics associated with them, a narrative of love, loss and female empowerment starts to unveil itself. What is so captivating about ‘Folklore’ is not only the way Swift involves herself in and out of the album, but how she symbolises many narratives through a set of specific, beautifully crafted songs. I LOVED her album Lover, I think Cruel Summer should have been a summer single but then...it ended up a very cruel summer for other reasons. I only bring up that album as they are pretty non-comparable as they are from different genres. While the songwriting on both is terrific (though I think TS knows when a line isn’t award worthy....), it’s more nuanced and connected here. It’s not a pop album, though no doubt it has many pop elements and lovely choruses. I did not like TS circa 2008, and that was based on me just finding a young precocious teen annoying, which was my loss. But I’ll get to rediscover more earlier work as she re-records it. Anyway, this album just highlights for those who discard her just because she is attractive (maybe I did...ugh) that her writing chops are at the top of the top. Expand

Folklore is a step in the right direction for Taylor Swift after the mediocre mess that is Lover. With many highlights on this record like Mirrorball, This is me trying, the 1, august, etc. But the second half of this record is an extremely dull, cheesy ride (betty being the cheesiest song there is, and not in a good way) that immediately turns me off from this album.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Folklore came as a suprise because Taylor had released an album less than a year before and she usually takes 2 year breaks between projects but it just turned out to be the biggest highlight in music for the year 2020. She abandons the electro-pop and synth pop from her previous album and puts more emphasis on lyricism on this album. The album is very nostalgic and mellow, kind of perfect for those melancholic days where you want to cry and also feel uplifted. The instruments are very understated but still very evocative. The last great american story which is my favorite from the album sees Taylor telling a story of woman who used to live in a house she how owns and Taylor sort of draws comparisons between them. My tears ricochet, betty, exile and this is me trying are also very somber, gut-wrenching songs which were highlights for me. Mirrorball, August and Invisible string have a more hopeful and fun tone than the other tracks and they just sound so sweet. Illicit affairs tells the story of an affair gone wrong and forbidden love and its probably the best song about cheating. Seven is very nostalgic and heartfelt and it reminds me of my childhood every time i listen to it. Mad Woman is song about an angry woman and the lyrics are so evocative,it explores sexism, female empowerment and revenge and it really reminded me of her 2017 album. I also just love Epiphany, it seems to be about the Coronavirus pandemic and the role frontline workers but the metaphor of soldiers fighting a battle is used. Its one of the most melancholic and emotional songs as it talks about the trauma caused by death. My personal favorites are the last great american dynasty, mirrorball and seven but i have deep appreciation for all the songs, she managed to outdo herself with this album Expand

It's TS at the best that we've ever seen her. And don't get me started on this album's stunning Track Five - 'My Tears Ricochet.' This may very well be the best song in Taylor Swift's discography. This song has a maturity, power, and quiet confidence about it that no other song of hers possesses, not even the years long, fandom - favorited 'All Too Well.'
'My Tears Ricochet' is, by a landslide, the best song on the album, if not the best song she has ever written.

A modern-folk masterpiece which finds her moving from her previous pop bangers into stunningly simple yet sharp melodies, ‘folklore’ will be going down in Swiftie history as one of her most unexpected, and undoubtedly one of her best.

These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
