Such a great album. The Neighborhood 1-4 are such an interesting and unique style of music and perfectly set the tone for such an extraordinary set of songs. Rebellion is so seemingly happy and catchy, and Wake Up makes you want to just run away into your own little happy place (yes, i thought this BEFORE seeing the Where the Wild Things Are trailer/film)... Its impossible not to smile.

One of my favorite albums of all time. It's best known for doing some seriously heavy lifting in the emotional department, but great melodies and fun songs like "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" and "Rebellion (Lies)" keep it from collapsing under its own weight, which makes songs like "Wake Up" all the more powerful.

Instantly, everyone was raving about their debut album "Funeral." I decided to buy it, without ever hearing any other songs than "Wake Up" When the first song came on, I had trouble getting use to their sound and his voice. This band was like none other I have heard before. As the album progressed, their sound became more familar and understandable. Each track brought something new to the table, yet complimented the others both lyrically and compositionally. By the time the last track "In the Backseat" came on, I knew the album was going to have an epic ending and it did not disappoint at all. Maybe the most emotional song on the album, Arcade Fire proved that they could go out with a bang, yet end in a whisper. And after owning this album for over a year, I am still giving it consistant play. I even now own it on vinyl! The glorious, unfathomably brilliant music that still makes my jaw drop seven years later. Every single moment on "Funeral" hovers in the Twilight Zone between hopelessness and euphoria. The way Win and Regine sing, and the band's ridiculous talent, create that blurred line. I would give any of Arcade Fire's albums 10's in a heartbeat. Yes, some people say they aren't the best singers but that doesn't matter. Being a good singer isn't always what matters. They just put so much heart into their songs and every song is distinct and catchy. Win's (yes the main singer's name is Win) voice is powerful and the melodies are so intricate.

The seven-member-band from Canada masterfully compounds congenial riffs, interesting sound experiments, poetic verses, and sing-along choruses in the album’s ten tracks and not once fails to make a song stick in your head. It’s mostly dark subjects and sad stories the lyrics deal with, yet they still achieve to induce an uplifting sentiment in the listener – most notably in “Crown of Love”, a song about unrequited love that raises hopes by shifting into an upbeat finale I’d love to hop around to on one of Arcade Fire’s concerts. This is, amongst other things, playing a part in Funeral’s uniqueness and makes it one of the greatest releases of the 21st century, although I actually wouldn’t name any single track of the album on such a list. It is the collective product that is absolutely outstanding, combining dulcet campfire tunes, anthems, symphonies, and raw social criticism into a phenomenal whole. Expand

The opening track, tunnels, is full of despair. Every track on this record has this feeling, this sense of contradiction, this bittersweet, lost but found, alone but at home, nostalgic feeling. A feeling felt at a funeral. I really want to empathize the nostalgic feeling because somehow this whole album has made me nostalgic. I can't explain this nostalgia maybe it's for those suburbs days, maybe its for anything I've felt. I am lost for words. Hidden in every track is this intense inner beauty which really sets it apart from all of Arcade Fire's other albums. In each song, when you dig and find those contradictions, as you listen you realize that each song is beautiful, and you find the album incredibly uplifting. The only reason I haven't given this album a 10 is that I have not owned it long enough to be sure its beauty won't fade.

darn good. you should probably get this cd. if you're wondering what it sounds like, i don't know. i guess at times some of the stuff reminds me of bright eyes (mainly the instrumentation and artwork), and a bunch of people are probably gonna yell at me for saying that. but i don't even like bright eyes, this is just sort of... in that vein i suppose. it's really darn good. you should probably get this cd. if you're wondering what it sounds like, i don't know. i guess at times some of the stuff reminds me of bright eyes (mainly the instrumentation and artwork), and a bunch of people are probably gonna yell at me for saying that. but i don't even like bright eyes, this is just sort of... in that vein i suppose. it's really sincere and honest, and, yes, emotional (i don't know why, but so many people automatically get scared away by the "emo" label... that stuff can still be good. i guess if you wanted to call this "emo," it would be the best emo ever). there's a lot of folky elements on this cd, but all that is mixed in with some very danceable beats and some rock n' roll guitarwork. it's just a really beautiful album with awesome orchestration and rock and vocals and all that. so yeah, definitely get it. I really hate hype, especially when I come across it on a site like this. I'd never heard of the band, but just heard so many wonderful things all at once, so I decided to check it out. It really is an amazing album. Definitely in my top 20 of the year (I listen to over 1000 albums a year, so that does mean something). My advice is just to do what I did: go out and listen to this thing.

It's probably the best album i've heard this year...and we are in april!!! It's been a while that i've been shivering listening music. For a debut album, i have one word: SOLID! My disc player is having a rough time these days because of this CD... it's really addictive. Bravo!!!

Very amazing songs except maybe the slowest ones. Both complex and emotional, hard to find a better album this year.

Very torn with this album becuase the songs that work, which is most of them, are some of the best songs I have ever heard (Neighborhood #2, Crown of Love). Still, this is definetely one of the ten best releases of 2004 and more proof that canadian indie rock is catching up with american indie.

There is a sense of urgency and freshness that the rest of indie rock just can't manufacture, Makes Coldplay and U2 sound uttery irrelevant and bloated. Best album I've heard in 10 years.

Simply filled with amazingly addictive, albeit unorthodox, hooks. Only a few tracks fall a little short, but even the songs that aren't incredible still have little somethings that make them fun. A great album in general, even if Win's voice is a little banshee-ish at times.

I haven't been this mesmerized and moved by an album since Interpol's "turn on the bright lights." Give this album a couple of listens before you make up your mind. It manages to be movingly poignant and celeberatory at the same time.

What a record. An extraordinary album about death and grief that is paradoxically uplifting and never for a moment indulgent. This is music of rare power, and an album that grows and grows and grows. Genius is not dead.

FInally something original is coming out of the indie scene without electronics in it. First time I heard this record, I was amazed. It kicks off with the brilliant songs neighborhood #1 and #2 which are the best tracks I've heard in a while. I love them. I love everyone of the up tempo songs, even though the sad and beautiful crown of love takes over the happy wave of superb FInally something original is coming out of the indie scene without electronics in it. My favorite album in a while. I think Funeral is one of the best first album ever. A couple of songs are just ok (hence the 9), but most of them are amazing. Buy it ! And get their self-titled demo, there are good songs on it too.

An excellent CD. Great catchy lyrics, vocals, and insturmentals. Good depth. A tad pretentious though, and Regine Chassagne's voice is irritating. Look for Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels), #3 (Powerout), #4 (7 Kettles), Crown of Love, and Rebellion (Lies).

A classic album, I rarely give 10/10 but I was extremley tempted with this. With repeated listens you discover more layers and therefore gets better with every listem. This album will last and last, hopefully someone will listen to this album in 15-20 years time and get the same emotional effect I did.

Win & Régine knocked one out of the park with this magnum opus. For a relatively new band, it is both commendable & heartening to see such a high level of songwriting ability. Broad as a continent, this disc has enough hits to choke a Billboard Chart, if there is any justice in the music business... The only downside is that now we have to wait impatiently for the sophomore release!

I haven't heard the whole album yet, but what I've heard I love. The sound, to me, is evocative of Native American influences: ancient, mournful, euphoric and yet anguished at the same time. And very here and now.

This album is really quite strong throughout musically and in terms of lyrics (I'm not making any concessions on lyrics. It's all good). This coming from a 'gusher' who has had more than enough experience with 'beauty' and 'originality'.

The sparkling combination of a rocking rhythm section, repeating guitars-riffs, folky accordeon+xylophone and oriental sounding violon and the intrigueing singing. This debut album gave me goose-pickles, which is very rare with me (for instance, i had it with boy-u2). It might be a one-day-fly, but still with the joy of the best one-night-stand i've ever had!

Critic score distribution:
  1. Positive: 32 out of 33
  2. Negative: 0 out of 33
  1. If I were to have just heard the first half of the disc, I probably would have proclaimed it the best of the year as well.
  2. So long as we're unable or unwilling to fully recognize the healing aspect of embracing honest emotion in popular music, we will always approach the sincerity of an album like Funeral from a clinical distance. Still, that it's so easy to embrace this album's operatic proclamation of love and redemption speaks to the scope of The Arcade Fire's vision.
  3. Marred by indie-rock clichés and occasional over-effort, it remains frustrating.
