Heaven Upside Down is Manson at his most human. If Pale Emperor was a welcome return to form that signaled a new day for the band, its successor is just as satisfying, if not better.

There’s more than enough life in his work to shock, provoke thought, and inspire for another two decades.

Heaven Upside Down betters that record [2015's The Pale Emperor]. [14 Oct 2017, p.50]

Manson’s nihilistic take on 2017 is interwoven with glimpses of personal darkness, wrapped up in mutually constrictive and damaging relationships on epic dirge Blood Honey and the closing Threats Of Romance, ordering a partner to do his murderous bidding on the Muse disco blues Kill4Me, and mourning the loss of his father on the seven-minute centrepiece Saturnalia. But even here there’s a renewed crackle to Manson’s attack--a viper regaining its bite.

That old black magic often sounds forced, but he makes up for it with a few more melancholy tracks.

We’re unlikely to see the power or the passion of Manson’s classic run again - it’s very difficult to bottle lightning twice - and you shouldn’t come to Heaven Upside Down expecting anything as textured, interesting or frightening as those early releases. That said ... It’s business as usual, but after a decade of disappointment, it’s good to know business is doing well.

Remarkably, Bates captures outsized bombast while infusing the music with a genuine energy that verges on punk. Manson’s music hasn’t sounded this alive in years, which makes it so disappointing that he squanders a golden opportunity. ... Manson sounds increasingly out of touch and desperate to preserve a persona that he and his audience should have outgrown a long time ago.

Fantastic record with great variety. Manson continues to show he's as entertaining as ever.

Since 1996 and this album along with The Pale Emperor are his best albums. This album is on a different level then Golden Age up until Born Villain, Those albums besides Golden Age lacked production quality and vocal delivery. Not this new album. Holy **** is it good. The album is way more deep then what is on the surface. Expand

My only complaint is that the record is rather short. In fact Heaven Upside Down is Marilyn Manson's shortest studio album to ever release. My only complaint is that the record is rather short. In fact Heaven Upside Down is Marilyn Manson's shortest studio album to ever release. Heaven Upside Down feels like a history lesson throughout the many eras of Marilyn Manson. Starting off heavy, it becomes more melodic and throughout the entirety of the record there has a pop feel to it, even on the heavier tracks earlier on. As I mentioned earlier, my only complaint is the length of Heaven Upside Down as it rivals that of Marilyn Manson's earlier works with aggression though has the more human Marilyn Manson towards the end. Oh no, my ears just feel deaf now... usually I write track-by-track reviews for albums... I'm not sure if I can even consider this to be an album rather than a way to lose all of my hearing... I'm going to turn down the volume on my headphones so I may have a more positive opinion.
Revelation #12 is actually quite awesome once you get past the start. Marilyn's vocals have aged into something that is weirdly more enjoyable than when he was just weird... this song is still weird though, but for the most part, I'm able to embrace it. (8/10)
Tattooed in Reverse: Pretty cool track actually... I have nothing else to say (9/10)
WE KNOW WHERE YOU **** LIVE is a weird title, and a weird song in comparison to the last two, and although it's supposed to come off as creepy, it somehow comes off as underwhelming, and this isn't the best I've heard of Manson's screaming. (5/10)
Say10 is quite ambient and melodic at the beginning and really tries to creep out the listener, and actually is pretty cool in that regard, and the ultimate breakdown is pretty satisfactory. Of course, the lyrics never make sense, so that's why the rating is so low, (7/10)
Kill4Me is actually quite poppy, but anytime a song starts to appeal to the mainstream, it better back it up with some interesting **** it barely succeeds in that regard really. (6/10)
Saturnalia actually has quite the groovy bass and is a track that I can actually just listen to (8/10)
Jesus Crisis (but s's with dollar signs) is trying to be edgy and political... and then snow white powder comes in... I just can't take this one seriously. (3/10)
Blood Honey is a much more intriguing track with energetic vocals contrasting with a slow moving instrumental piece. Also, less creepy. (9/10)
Heaven Upside Down oddly sounds like some angsty teen song at the beginning... and strangely doesn't stray far from that point, thus making this one of the memorable tracks on this album. (9/10)
Threats of Romance is good... weirdly this album was more rock-ish than I thought it'd be. (8/10)
Final Score: 72/100 or 7/10 for Metacritic purposes.
Better than I expected, and is a good listen towards the end as it pulls off three great songs in a row during that part. I don't recommend listening to this with headphones, and if you do listen to it with headphones, don't have it turned up all the way during the first song... the others aren't too bad actually.

Heaven Upside Downer! Nowhere near as solid as some of his previous works. Mid/Slow tempo songs infect what could of been a great album. I'mHeaven Upside Downer! Nowhere near as solid as some of his previous works. Mid/Slow tempo songs infect what could of been a great album. I'm really struggling to find the gems and can't believe the majority reviews giving this album a "masterpiece" status among his other works. The lyrics at times are juvenile & the vocal hooks are not strong. There are bits of the past that tease you but unfortunately go nowhere, while the rest of the record doesn't have that violent ear addicting cocaine quality that it needs. I will be curious to see how many songs he plays of this live and if they are just as lifeless & dead. Expand
