If saying "does what it says on the box" is cliche - I'll just say the Femmes have done it again.

Thematic and musical depth aren't what you came to this album for, but you get them as friendly bonus. The cheeky lyrics occasionally turning dark dive into the abyss in the finale - without changing a word of the song - GG scourges the here and now with God Bless America. it made an album

The cheeky lyrics occasionally turning dark dive into the abyss in the finale - without changing a word of the song - GG scourges the here and now with God Bless America. it made an album I could have otherwise simply enjoyed and moved on from an experience worth having, and talking about.

Strong Tracks include; I'm Nothing, Not OK, I'm Not Gonna Cry, and the aforementioned rendition of God Bless America

Where earlier efforts such as Hallowed Ground saw the band command sparse irreverence, Hotel Last Resort, much like We Can Do Anything, won’t generate much excitement.

For those not already familiar with the Femmes, this probably won’t be the point of entry that provides a portal to instant fandom, but it’s a fun and worthwhile listen. ... It’s a solid representation of what they do well and an impish and occasionally truly insightful good time.

A grouchier echo of that opening shot [their 1983 debut album]. [Sep 2019, p.27]
