Despite some high points, this is hardly the definitive live Springsteen album. [May/June 2001, p.116]

Live In New York City may be the first example of Springsteen allowing himself to be reduced to what he has carefully avoided becoming up to now: pure product. [Jun/Jul 2001, p.112]

Man, this guy just can do no wrong. Great album, excellent sampling of songs and the E-Street Band sounds great as always. I enjoy his solo Man, this guy just can do no wrong. Great album, excellent sampling of songs and the E-Street Band sounds great as always. I enjoy his solo work but when he gets together with the E Streeters it becomes something magical. Full Review »

Bruce & the E Street Band are, IMO, one of the best live experiences in rock n' roll. Granted, they've slowly inched away from Bruce & the E Street Band are, IMO, one of the best live experiences in rock n' roll. Granted, they've slowly inched away from their peak in 1978, but they still put on a great show, and "Live In New York City" is an excellent document of their 1999-2000 'reunion' tour. It's been re-mixed and edited like an album, and if you're a collector and a purist, you won't like that, but for fans who just want one good set from the 1999-2000 tour, this is it. The two new songs are very good, particularly "American Skin" (very controversial but powerful). Occasionally it's overwhelming and bombastic, especially on the rockers (and the big-arena mixing style doesn't help), but this is still a tight set: some tracks like "Born in the USA" and "Youngstown" are even given fresh, bold arrangements, breathing new life into the former (which is overplayed on classic rock radio) and rejuvenating the latter (which was a forgotten track on a forgotten album).
