A squally electric guitar solo lets you know Love & Hate isn’t just another slice of vintage soul, but something a little more intriguing than that.

“Cold Little Heart” builds from piano and the merest shiver of strings to a Morricone-esque pitch of intensity, before Kiwanuka himself arrives five minutes in. It’s a big, powerful statement of intent that the rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to.

It’s true, Love & Hate will win no prizes for innovation. But this s more than just gussied up heritage soul to peddle to nostalgic baby-boomers.

Kiwanuka's sound can be compared to great names like Enrico Morricone but he still manages to keep his unique sound. And most importantly Kiwanuka does have something to say. He creates interesting and catchy lyrics that are much deeper than just nice-sounding rhymes.
In the end, I feel like he still has room for growth but this sets a good groundstone for his work. I'll stay waiting for the next project from Kiwanuka, he may be one of the next big names in future rock music.
