For me, the cover signified that it wouldn't be your typical pop album, and that's definitely true, but the lyrics tend to be deceptively light - in a good way. You're drawn in and you think some of the songs would be a little darker, but then she hits you with this completely contrasting, uplifting chorus. It's weird but it works. Totally outstanding.

Deep, sad, reflective and perfect. One of my favorites debut album from all time

  1. Despite its faults, it is one of the most unique albums released by a major label in 2008.

Unfortunately, it translates into kohl-eyed pantomime, rather than cathartic music, with lyrics so hopelessly trite they sound like a feel-good tract for preschoolers.
  3. Although her songs occasionally feature the alto piano of Apple or the otherworldly trilling of Morissette or Björk, her voice can sound thin and inconsistent, giving the whole thing a somewhat derivative feel.
