In all, Ninth is a striking return to form.

"The Godfather of Goth" sounds like the genre's savior here, coming on strong with those Bowie-sized aspirations and nailing that attractive Nosferatu-meets-Art-School style.

Ninth may not live up to what one expects from early Murphy or Bauhaus, however it does do its job fairly well, and it's unlikely that Murphy will top this awesomeness alone (unless there's a reunion of his old band in the works).

If Ninth is to be seen as Peter Murphy's renaissance, then we have far more to look forward to than a goth of a certain age in a leather studded rocking chair croaking "undead undead undead" forevermore.

While there may not be anything startingly new here, there is a definite sense of ease with Murphy's past. [Aug. 2011, p. 123]

Murphy muddles through the workmanlike art-rock of openers "Velocity Bird" and "See Saw Sway" before hitting confident stride on "I Spit Roses" And "Never Fall out." [Aug 2011, p.94]

Where his menace once oozed, it now hiccups.

Murphy's unfailing rich darkness pervades Ninth but this can start to drag at times. [May 2011, p.80]

His most conventional and, frankly, dull [album] pursuing a plodding take on alt rock, in the uninteresting middle ground between early U2 and Stiltskin, with occasional dashes of doom-lite. [Aug. 2011, p. 101]
