I'm thoroughly impressed that Tyler wrote the majority of the songs on this project on his own. Especially considering the wordplay that he incorporates. I do feel that there were heavy 70's influences in the songs, which is very different from their well-known album, Blurryface. So, while I enjoyed this project, it did take some getting used to. This is one of my favorite top albums. I wasn't a fan of Trench so I was pleasantly surprised that this album is as good as it is. Still no Blurryface but comes pretty close.

My favorites: Redecorate, Formidable and The Outside.

Where to even begin with twenty one pilots? Their catalogue of music is so well crafted, comprehensive, and each album has a unique feel to it. Trench and Blurryface tell their own stories, usually a mirror of whatever Tyler Joseph struggles with.
Scaled and Icy doesn’t do that.
It doesn’t have the depth of those earlier projects. It wasn’t designed to be an all encompassing experience

What does Scaled and Icy have?
Fun. An infectious sense of fun.
Tyler has said in interviews that he pushed against the natural inclination to go darker, because he didn’t want to contribute to the stress of the world’s current state. In my opinion, that was the right call. The moment I heard “Good Day” start up, I wanted to get up and bounce down a street. Scaled and Icy feels like some reassuring words from a friend. Every song has personality bursting from the seams. I’ve heard some songs described as “bland” or “soulless,” but this genuinely baffles me. On the contrary, every song (except Formidable) has an instantly recognizable flair. Formidable is the unfortunate exception, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad song. It really isn’t, but it’s traditional to a fault. I’ve also heard criticism towards the lyrical content, especially with Saturday. I have to wonder if we were listening to the same song. Saturday is about how if you don’t make conscious efforts to differentiate each day, they start to blend together and you lose your sense of time. That’s incredibly relatable, especially after lockdown, where I experienced this exact sensation.
Each track is very replayable, something I can’t say about every TøP song. Vessel may be a wonderful album that tackles a lot of real problems like suicide, but for that same reason I’m not itching to listen to something like “Guns for Hands” again. It feels wrong to jam to that. Scaled and Icy doesn’t have that problem, even with a deeper song like “Redecorate.”
Scaled and Icy feels like the perfect palate cleanser. It’s sense of fun is unparalleled; combine that with unique instrumental identity makes this a great album to listen to anytime, all the time.

I truly enjoyed that 80's style music is gives off, I listen to it almost everyday. The music style is truly a unique one, almost 80's like yet not and has a "pop" to it at the same time.

A really good album I find it very underrated from the fans obviously not as good as trench or blurryface but the first single shy away Ticks every box a great retro song that gives you the chills Saturday and choker being the next singles are great no changes is a great flashback to fairly local similar sound with great falsettos redecorate is so underrated a brilliant final song to the album Expand

Easily their worst and most disappointing album. Despite an amazing trench album in 2018. This more pop oriented album doesn’t have the right TOP energy and has only a couple of good songs such as shy away. Some songs are just atrocious such as choker and Saturday. Overall super sad to see such a downgrade from trench.

I finally wrote this after six months because I had to come to terms. Scaled And Icy is not a good album. It's arguable that this is a complete sellout by a band that saved and changed my life at age 14, and the best live concert I've ever been to. I admit my bias here. I admit my bias here. I loved Trench- its their best album and its immaculate, full of feeling and emotion. Even though I may not love their earlier albums as much as I used to, Trench is still a 10/10 for me. Scaled And Icy, outside of a few tracks, sounds uninspired, poorly produced, and for the first time for Twenty One Pilots, lacking direction. Where do I begin? The Elton John ripoff Mulberry Street? The try hard gangster No Chances? The horrific camp singalong Bounce Man? The cheap and chintzy sounding The Outside? The vapid lyrics of Saturday? Sigh...

But then how is this a 5/10 rather than something even lower? Well, there are some great songs on here. Shy Away is great, sounds like what The Killers tried to pull off on their album Wonderful Wonderful but it's even more fleshed out here. Choker has a hell of a chorus, and Paul Meany, part of what made Trench so amazing, comes back on Redecorate and pulls off one of Twenty One Pilots' darkest and most brooding songs to date. Never Take It may come off as generic radio rock, but I enjoy it. Formidable is sweet, even if the lyrics leave some stuff to be desired.

Though it may not reach the heights of Trench, Scaled And Icy is still one of the best rock albums of the 2000s and definitely deserves a spot in that category, every song on this record is good, and taking into account the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have to say that Tyler Joseph really outdid himself on this. Trench is better, but Scaled And Icy is still extremely well made.

I’ve seen many people disliking this new pop aspect with songs like “Saturday.” It may not be your favorite, however the band itself does not emphasize in capsule their sound based on their standards. I recommend listening first in order and then shuffle them out. You will understand the propaganda the world they’re displaying (DEMA). Agora Redecorate, a última faixa do álbum. Yet, it's not necessarily sound different from their 2013 album, Vessel, which also had upbeat tunes such as "Migraine", "Holding onto You", "The Run and Go", etc. This shouldn't be a surprise for most fans, yet there is different opinions spread across the internet. I saw a Tik Tok with their new song "Bounce Man" playing in the background with text on screen reading: "I miss when Tyler was depressed." - Not only is that extremely rude & tone-deaf, it's completely missing the point. And not only is it rude, ignorant, and tone deaf, it's also not true. Tyler still writes in this album about matters that matter most to him, and he does it in a seamless way. A lot of said they "sold out" but it's simply not true. All I'm saying is, no matter what you opinions are of this album, I believe it deserves to be recognized as a beautiful, fun, sonically interesting piece of art. Fan of them forever & always. |-/

Great Album! With catchy songs like Saturday and Mulberry Street to classic sounding songs like Choker and my personal favorite, Redecorate. This album has something for everyone!

    Huge disappointment.
This album is unbelievably bland, boring and uncreative. There’s like two good songs on it, the rest is pure garbage. And I also don’t care for the story Twenty One Pilots’ albums try to tell. The most important thing is the music, which is really, really bad.

After the beast of an album that was Trench, no one can fault Twenty One Pilots for having a tough time formulating as cohesive of an album that delivers the same quality, power, and emotional depth. While sounding polished and pristine in production value, the lyrics lack Joseph's usual reflective depth, they lack the raw grit of previous songs like My Blood, Lane Boy, etc. Worse yet, most of the melodies are forgettable. After my FIRST listen-throughs of both Blurryface and Trench, I remembered a good chunk of the tunes, and found myself singing them that same day. I hardly remember anything from Scaled and Icy without listening back to it. No doubt, the clique is going to love any song this band drops, that's just how the fanbase is. And hey, as a fan of Joseph, I'm happy he's arrived at a happier place and that the change came out in his music. But in time I think people will see this album as a safe plateau the band came to rest on instead of continuing to pioneer the mountain of alternative rock they'd conquered with Trench. Expand

this is a solid album, cohesive songs that works well with one another. but at the same time that fits good lyricism and songwriting, it doesn't push any boundaries, is another good pop rock album.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A solid 5. I mean, I'm a huge top fan, but this record is undoubtedly (for me) their worst performance. I understand they're trying exploring new genres, but this didn't come out as expected. It sometimes feels like it's not them, like when I first listened to Shy Away, I thought I was listening to The Drums or some indie band. Then songs like Saturday, I thought it was a brighter version of Avicii or David Guetta, or Mulberry Street and Bounce Man which are commercial pop anthems. From Vessel/RAB, which was a huge start point for what their career was leading to, to Blurryface, an album that established their road, finally to Trench, their best record. After developing 3 great works in a row the fence is set higher, but I don't think Scaled and Icy made it. The way they almost debugged the rap verses and hip hop vibes was really strange for me because their previous album was almost full of these. Nevertheless, the production was still amazing, and I'd save songs like Choker, The Outside and Redecorate (although I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion) just because they were the most similar to what I was expecting. This is just a review for the music, I believe their concept story will go further with this album. Expand

Scaled and Icy does have its lackluster moments, but it is an overall fun and bright record with some hidden lyrics that are in traditional Twenty One Pilots fashion. It's certainly different from their other albums, and that will drive a decent amount of TOP's fanbase away from it, but it is ultimately still a good sound.

"Sunny", "bright", and "colourful" are perfect words to describe Scaled and Icy. However, lack of flow and variation of production are the flaws of this album. There are no songs that can be a big hit, like Stressed Out and Ride from Blurryface and Jumpsuit from Trench. But, I highly recommend you a hidden gem in this album. A track called "Never Take It". It gives 90s rock vibes.
