The trio's strongest asset has always been inspired, thoughtfully crafted pop songs, which Share the Joy should finally make clear.

Not many bands can recover from a disastrous album and come back better than ever. Thanks to some hard work and good choices, you can add Vivian Girls to that short list.

What's key is they remain as disaffected as brother band Crystal Stilts, and cling to longing, woozy Slumberland vibes without fear of brighter tones, trendy surf and obvious, intelligible lyrics (little more than an amusing addition).

The overall result is pleasant yet hardly exceptional.

Share the Joy is an obvious reaction to the once-underground movement that is now bloated with wannabe's and imposers.

Share The Joy sees our own Vivians enter into a similar contretemps: locking horns with death and with demons (literally, on "Trying To Pretend"), they achieve a narrative victory that nonetheless remains, for the auditor, a work in progress.

Like a broken record, Vivian Girls appear doomed to repeat themselves.
