Not as good as melodrama but it’s still good. She conveys many issues such as climate change and fame and it’s just too good

Unpopular Opinion: Solar Power is far from bad, but we're so used to gloom and melancholy, gloom and blue that it was hardly going to be an appreciated album.

Lorde perfects every sound she tries. Sonically, a wonderful sun-soaked, relaxing album. Lyrically, almost haunting. With an overall theme of 'relationships' (both personal, with the environment and herself), there's such a powerful and beautiful message. Solar Power is an album I haven't stopped listening to, and one I'm sure I'll continue to listen to throughout my adulthood.

Solar Power is a display of evolution of Lorde, and it is a beautiful one. The expectations were extremely high, as Melodrama was a masterpiece and Lorde disappointed the people awaiting for a similar album. However, when looking at SP not in terms of sophomore album's continuation, it shows its high quality.

She’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but she substantially says what’s on her mind and stays true to who she is in the moment despite what’s current or trendy in music. Ella is the true lyricist of our generation not only because she’s a poet, but because she’s authentically herself, no games and no apologies.

Not surprising that the critics got it wrong again and this album will age like fine wine, just like the masterpiece that Melodrama currently is.

RIDICULOUS! I was watching the Mickey Mouse Press Conference with my 7 year old son and guess who shows up on the screen?

    LeAntonoff himself!

My son asked me “is that the guy who produced the same boring folk pop album 5 times and absolutely RUINED the entire music industry as we know it?"
I had to lie to my own son.

    Shame on you, LeAntonoff.

That seems to have been the general consensus. Lorde's return came with a bright warning as SP bright lead single invited us to join her on her idyllic commune. It channeled George Michael's classic freedom 90 along with primal screams ''Loaded'', to no complaint (except from the public) the record sent a collective dread throughout the music sphere. With fans either hating it passionately or others claiming "its not that bad " . And from that moment things would stay the same: the noted similarities, the divisiveness then dejected appreciation. The record begins with a magnificent start luring you in with flutes and hyper specific lyrics in the vein of Lorde before exploding into a gratifying chorus in which she dispels celeb worship culture. An opener worthy of green or being a cathartic closer. "California " blows in with a psychedelic warmth and one of the best opening lyrics of 2021. Seemingly sparse emphasizing her raspy voice Lorde remunerates on the day that brought her to the "camera flash " with self awareness beyond her years descending into the blissful hopeful outro. Jumping years future "Stoned At The Nail Salon" begins vying for the best lyric of this decade in its opening line. In it like most of the album she reflects on her life post fame: the implications and consequences. Switching between memories of anonymity/privacy to the grace of domesticity she builds a content image . One which negates her touring life with her horded normalcy. One of my highlights about SP is the narrative coherence. The production so far has been swarmed with acoustic guitars, deceptive drums and airy production flourishes that aim to accentuate and not take center stage. Admittedly, Antanoff commercial demand has made the album less effective due to derivative moment's but he can forgiven in helping Lorde execute her vision. Album fan favorite "FF" comes with the closets to electronic production in SP will ever be. Addressing the climate change with adept imagery. From the failed previous generations wasted efforts to theirs. The songs second half is fu.kin brilliant! The 2k pop of Robyn assisted outro is catchy and breathtaking. Using the reversed cords of 'ribs' she addresses "PH" Ella before the experimental calm of the Robyn outro. The sonic sister "MR" goes full circle with a bubble gum pop sound narrated by satirical wellness celeb culture critiques. The emotional high points "MWAA"&"BS" channel liability&WITD as they address love and grief with the confessional dexterity attributed to Lorde. What I learned midway is this isn't a Lorde record it's an Ella record. She's flexing her lyrical prowess through 3rd person narratives (Dominoes &Helen Of Troy) along with her family, bliss and state of mind in the blockbuster bjorkian "Oceanic Feeling ",a career best. In summary SP is a stellar somewhat quite record that despite succumbing to surface level monotony manage to hold it's place in the year bests. Favorite's :big star, the path, man with an axe, mood ring, dominoes Expand

Competing to her others two albums, solar power is absolutely much more easier and relaxing, it feels nothing but free and weightless, its giving listeners a 4pm-at-the-beach type of feeling. Lorde is such a flexible artist who can put us in different emotions by every album she made. For example, ''Pure Heroine'' is a strong, powerful teenager telling the whole world she is going to rule it one day with those powerful lyrics and heavy beats; ''Melodrama'' is a heartbreaking moment of a broke-up girl who finally grown; and ''Solar Power'' is that same girl who chose to let go of the past, and moved on with freedom and happiness. Its such a beautiful piece of art work, but also absolutly underrated, because people are giving too much expectation on her new album that most people won't get satisfied no matter what she had dropped. First, the opening track "The Path." Lorde opens the album in a way that easily beats all the singles. Second, "Secrets From A Girl (Who's Seen It All)," that song is amazing, it's the chords of "Ribs" reversed as she sings to herself from her first era. The song features a beautiful spoken part featuring Robin Carlsson. Now, the low points; in my opinion, "Solar Power" was the only serious low point, and nevertheless, I think it fits well in the context of the album, just not as a single and it still sounds straight from a Claritin commercial, but you know an album is great when its lowest point is still a 7/10. Overall, this album is significantly better than I was expecting and I do feel this album was worth the 4-year wait despite how the critics may feel. *EDIT: Coming back 3-months post release, this has just been an overall disappointment. I tried to like it, I really did. Unfortunately the roll out was a total mess and it just won't touch Melodrama. What a shame :( Expand

Totally indifferent this album is lorde's worst work so far his songs just me They were bored apart from their great plagiarism towards other lorde artists I can only tell you to take a 10-year break so that you can bring us a better work

the album is very good, lorde has clearly matured and, even though this may seem a step back from melodrama, the quality is still great. the production is a little repetitive sometimes, but at least you can tell that Lorde and Jack wanted the album to be cohesive, like an immersive experience.

I really loved Solar Power with my heart. It's not as somepeople say, they say that just because it get fad. Disclaim yourself and "stay as long as you need to get familiar with the feeling" so you can fully apreciate this work. She do that again and i just love it.

Of course we were all expecting the Lorde we’ve all come to know and love. Sure, it isn’t the radio friendly edge that carried us through much of our highest moments pre-pandemic. However, this album is full of delicate introspection that serves a greater purpose: to remind the world of the vulnerabilities of our icons and our shared struggles and fears, especially global issues that are increasingly threatening life as we know it.

If you’re not a fan on the first listen, try listening with quality headphones and the lyrics in front of you— it is a sonically relaxing and lyrically enlightening experience. And try to appreciate and respect the human on the other side of the speaker, someone who like each of us, should not be creatively limited to the expectations of our peers.

As a Lorde fan I am quite biased, so of course the album did grow on me with its use of psychedelic elements, slowed tempo, and less than average song lengths. This truly was her "weed" album, and I give her a round of applause for making this project as Ella. Expand

Solar Power is a collection of subdued songs, which are quite similar to each other with only few elements tearing them apart. Just like Taylor Swift's folk albums, songs from Solar Power can be an okay background music with only few standout tracks. The title tracks shows that Lorde knows how to build-up the song, while "Mood Ring" has nice production choices.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lorde's all grown up from her chaotic teen phases seen in Pure Heroine and Melodrama, and Solar Power is the shiny emblem testifying to her maturity, both in terms of songwriting and lyrical content. The new album sees our favorite singer craft the most original sounds, and the most resonating lyrics yet. Yes, it might not be as climatic and to-the-point and catchy as its predecessors, but Solar Power shows a different, and perhaps even more lovable, side of Lorde we should learn to embrace. Expand

After Lorde's amazing, groundbreaking Melodrama, Solar Power seems weak in comparison, with the same, airy and boring theme running through. The lyricism is also subpar. The ideas that are trying to be presented are either not being done well or just weak. I don't know what happened to Lorde but this is definitely a great disappointment.

One of the best albums of the year.

In my opinion, Lorde has received mixed/negative reviews for this album, and this album is her taking her own turn. Most of the album was a pleasant listening experience, but I think that Stoned At The Nail Salon could have more potential, and Oceanic Feeling seemed a little too long for an outro. All in all, an album that comes as a shock to most, and possibly the beginning to some more experimental chill alt-pop.

I love how she reinvents her self in every album. This sounds nothing like "Pure Heroine" or "Melodrama" and that's the cool thing. She is growing up and experimenting with her sound. At first listen and after reading some fan reviews I felt a little disappointed, but after 4-5 listens to the album, I really love it and think it has no skips. Better than I expect. Plenty of mainstream pop stars have decided they no longer want to be mainstream pop stars. They’ve tried everything to achieve their goal, from making deliberately unlistenable albums, to – in the memorable case of the late Scott Walker – locking themselves in a monastery on the Isle of Wight.
But few have attempted to bid farewell to mainstream pop stardom as prettily as Lorde does on her third album. It opens with a guitar picking a gentle, woozy-sounding figure. A flute glides beatifically by and Lorde offers a grim depiction of life as a teenager superstar – complete with “nightmares from the camera flash” – before apparently saying goodbye to all that: “alone on a windswept island”, she “won’t take the call if it’s the label or radio”. “If you’re looking for a saviour,” she adds, “that’s not me”, which would sound a little self-aggrandising had the world of online fandom not become so overheated that whenever a female pop star posts anything on social media, the responses are clogged up by stans calling them “mum”, “queen” and “goddess”.

Her flow and use of production and her true style pulls through throughout the entire album. Tracks like the Path, Stoned at the nail salon, Solar power, and her usage of reference to religion although I can consider vain with verses "Prettier than Jesus" did not go down with me listening to it originally, but the rest of the album does deliver on the sound and vibe she is well known for! Highly recommend to listen while sipping cocktails on the beach side! The album delivered accordingly to her style! Worth to listen to it more than once! Love it! Expand

All these connections Lorde is trying to make: her strange pastiche imagination of the ’70s, that random spoken word interlude by Robyn about climate change, and the themes of “sun healing,” never fully reach each other. Often, they come off as disingenuous and out of touch more than they read as brilliant, or comical. Whether the album is one big prank, or just one majorly failed experiment, the gist of having the “privilege to ignore” is lost in translation. All you are left with is just a handful of pretty alright songs.

If you're riding and vibing with Lorde, this bright shapelessness is superb mood music. If you're not riding her wave, Solar Power can seem elusive, even cloying, as it circles and sways with a smile.
