This album has lots of things going for it. The various elements come together nicely to create a pleasant sounding album. I would say this is more folk pop than dream pop but it does have a slight otherworldly feel to it. Lyrically, it is very impressive with themes of ecological damage and doomsday clocks mixed with the more mundane personal themes. Musically the different instruments and sounds employed make an overall sound that adds up to more than the sum of its parts. There is no standout piece of genius on this album. No song you have to keep going back to. There is however 40 minutes or thereabouts of consistently good songs together. This would definitely encourage me to check back through the back catalog.

One of my favourite albums of 2020 so far. Beautiful songwriting and great use of dynamics throughout. If any band out there deserves a Mercury nomination, it's these guys.

Among the burning forests and boiling oceans, it's reassuring to know that raw beauty can still be found within the groove of vinyl, of which this--the Newcastle band's fourth long-player--provides rich evidence. [Mar 2020, p.110]

Yet overall there is some intangible ingredient missing here and while the tracks can be enjoyable and soothing while playing there’s not quite enough bite to make them memorable.

Ultimately, four albums in, Spook the Herd proves Lanterns on the Lake to be one of the most consistent acts in the business.
