The album is most compelling when Walker attempts to figure out how the shoulda-beens or close calls haunting his life fit into the present day.

The sound on Stay Gold is what suits him best: heart-on-sleeve Americana that’s equal parts earnest and exuberant.

Each track is a short story, a beautifully composed snapshot of a moment in a life, all set to choruses masterfully crafted to slot in alongside the radio-rock classics of the 1980s.
