Espinoza and Murray return from a four-year hiatus in fine form. [No. 93, p.54]

It's a joy to hear their sorrowful whispers and swirling, multi-instrumental collages after a four-year absence.

Instead of sounding labored and forced, System Preferences is gentle and effortless, as if it were recorded four months after Hymn and Her, instead of four years.

The studio elements dates System Preferences. [Oct/Nov 2012, p.122]

The overly fussy, played-too-safe System Preferences seems to be begging for a bit of Earlimart's old weirdness, an oddly placed bridge, a couple of bum notes, a "Burning the Cow", something. Without it, this record winds up feeling a little too perfect for its own good.

On System Preferences, Earlimart continues to forgo the big hooks for a subtle, slow-burning impact, but it's at a pace that does not quite catch up to the increasing speed of familiarity.
