Boygenius are back and they are bigger, happier and for all intensive purposes better. the record is a sublime celebration of connection, from the openers hymm thanking ancestors and family for the part they played in creating those they loved to the beautiful True blue. They feel like a singular entity writing, singing and unleashing cathartic screams together. The Satanist (aka myBoygenius are back and they are bigger, happier and for all intensive purposes better. the record is a sublime celebration of connection, from the openers hymm thanking ancestors and family for the part they played in creating those they loved to the beautiful True blue. They feel like a singular entity writing, singing and unleashing cathartic screams together. The Satanist (aka my favorite song that's not a single) is a rage filled exorcism that feels complimentary to 20$ burdened nostalgia. It's songs like these that feel the most Boygenius as rather than being centered on one voice with others contributing it's this inextricably communal composition. I also **** loved the me& my dog callback (me&my dog is literally one of my favorite songs EVER) and the lyrics for Letter to an old poet. I don't think the record is perfect but this year so far it's the best one out. Genuinely have so much to love about this! Higlights: Satanist, $20,letters to an old poet, without you without them,Emily I'm sorry. Expand

Everything I wanted from the album, bangers, incredible vocals, emotional hard hitters and everyone gets their own spotlight without overshadowing others

New sounds but at the same time they stay true to themselves and their own sound. Each one of them are contributing so much to the songs

absolute peak artistry. i love all of them individually but you can hear and feel the love and affection and passion with which they regard one another and their craft and it just propels this album into a whole new stratosphere. each and every song is absolutely beautiful. give it a listen!

Good album. More structured in a sense of them, taking turns creatively, in exchange for deduction of the free-flowing side they imbued on their debut EP, which none of it felt on the record. The songs felt really nice and warm but also hollow at the same time because it felt like three entities are trying to subside each other instead of blending.

A beautiful evolution of their sound! Can't wait to hear this album live. Favorite songs: satanist, not strong enough, $20, cool about it

It can be seen how Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus complement each other on this album, and that is very nice. There is an undoubted balance of energy and sensibility on these tracks that it is hard to not want to pin some of this strong ballads on the heart. Lyrics are beautiful too and, over all, this is a great first record to get to know these three girls combining their power.

Great album. Took me a while to fathom it, and I still need more time with a few songs, but overall this album is super creative and fresh, and it's just a delight to listen to.

Favorite Tracks: 'Not Strong Enough', 'Letter To An Old Poet' , 'Emily I'm Sorry', 'Cool About It', 'True Blue'.

    Great work.

Incredibly great song writing going on here. ‘Cool About it’ really shines through in that department. ‘Not Strong Enough’ has really great production and a great vocal performance from all three during the chorus. Overall very good project and it’s almost constantly in my music rotation.

A nearly perfect album. Lots of variation (which is understandable with 3 different songwriters) but not so much that it feels disjointed. Lovely, angelic vocals from all 3 performers with soft (and sometimes strong) instrumentation backing it up. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the distortion on the vocals on "Leonard Cohen". Everything else about this album was great.

Love the brighter energy on this second project of theirs. Seems like they had lots of fun making it too! I love all their individual works but when they come together, it’s something electric!

Absolutely top tier writing. I love these three artists to pieces, so when they come together the results are always electrifying.

Great collaboration between 3 of the most talented songwriters of our time. They bring out the best on each other on the record, while staying true to their own styles.

So, the record is not an epoch-defining instant classic. It’s just fine. Occasionally amazing, pretty in parts, patchy in others.

It's a great illustration of how the trio are even more than the sum of their considerable parts. [Jun 2023, p.25]

In every sense, it is a union of its creators’ art and voices. It’s an album in conversation with their EP, with their inspirations, and with their solo work, resulting in one of the rare cases where the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
