I"ve been pretty upset about this album since "Rotting In Vain" was released as a single as it was just an uninspired "Falling Away From Me" rip-off. The further singles only made my mind up this way. "The Serenity of Suffering" is nothing but an over-hyped rip-off from their older material. And it certainly doesn't deserve any of attention and worshipping it actually got.

I want to make it clear that I physically dislike Korn. They are one of the worse bands to come out of the nu-metal "movement" (Limp Bizkit is the worst no question). They obviously suffer from the things every nu-metal band is affected by, such as: unoriginal songwriting, bad lyrics, everyone repeating each other, etc. But they're not all that bad. I guess the thing I dislike about them is all their commercial success and their fans heralding them as a great metal band when they're just more of the nu-metal jerk-offs.

Their music is semi-standable at times, but most of the time it's basically what YouTube guitarists play when they're making fun of genres like nu-metal and djent, (well I guess djent's not really a real genre, depends on what you think) but just with some at times comedically bad vocals. This album isn't really different. It's an ok album if you're looking for some weirder nu-metal.

If I had to pick highlights I'd say Insane, Rotting in Vain and A Different World are the best songs on this album. But stay away from Take Me, it's bad.

Serenity is certain to scratch an itch. Still, there's a sense of "good enough" with all of their recent releases, and it's a problem this record just can't shake.

There are sludgy, down-tuned power chords, there are whiny lyrics about how life is constantly unfair (reminder: Korn frontman Jonathan Davis is 45 years old), there is even that vocal tic where Davis sort of cackles like a disturbed demon.

Admittedly, some riffs do feel like re-runs of Korn classics, holding the album back from true greatness. That’s charming in itself, though: reminding us how deeply important this band once were and continue to be.
