As a huge fan of Sweet's early to mid period work I wanted to love this album but sadly I don't. The 12 tracks on the album were recorded during the same session that gave birth to last years Tomorrow Forever, and really it's just much of the same unfocused work with songs that leave no lasting impression.

There are one or two really good tracks on the record {Girl With Cat}, but still

If Tomorrow's Daughter isn't a great Matthew Sweet album, it's most certainly a good one, featuring a batch of strong songs played with genuine skill and commitment by one of the most distinctive artists in contemporary power pop. If you liked Tomorrow Forever, you'll enjoy the sequel, and even if you missed the first installment, this is well worth a spin for pop obsessives.

This set borrows from those same Nebraska recording sessions [of 2017's Tomorrow Forever] with nary a weakling to show. Pounding rock'n'roll colludes with lethal hooks, while jangly guitars and soulful harmonies mesh with ethereal melodies. [Jul 2018, p.34]

As much as the veteran musician should be complimented for his work ethic, he can do better than the overall competent but unexciting Tomorrow’s Daughter.
