Soundgarden's Ultramega Ok is completely different from the direction that they go later on in their career. There are a lot of punk inspired songs on here. Ultramega Ok is an interesting mix of genre. It feels like a mix of punk and alternative metal. Chris Cornell's voice isn't used as effectively as it would be on later records but his voice still stands out on songs like Beyond the Wheel.

This version has been remixed and remastered to beef up the sound and integrate Chris Cornell's glorious vocals more fully into the songs. ... Six demos, recorded on eight-track the previous year, give a good idea if where the band were coming from. [May 2017, p.52]

Everything’s been cleaned up and beautifully balanced, and it’s for the better; the engineering is so good, in fact, it actually elevates the songs themselves. ... While nothing here [in the collection of six demos] is all that revelatory, it’s still fun to watch the band tinker with their songs.

Six inessential demos added to the original album hardly warrant the ‘deluxe edition’ tag. But as a document of a musical sea change, Ultramega OK is indispensable.
