Lana's second album has songs that I personally love such as West Coast, but most of the other tracks are very somber and subdued. For some, this is a good thing. But for me, this really isn't something that I see in her. While I like some specific songs, the overall album isn't something I would want to listen to again.

Good record but a little derivative. It sounds like Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" repeated over and over again. The issue of her authenticity I think is irrelevant. Either she's playing a character or not.

Being a big fan of Born To Die, I was very disappointed with the mediocre 'Ultraviolence' which, nearing two months on, still hasn't grown to my ears. The album has been completely over-praised by fans and even the most prestigious music critics, likely for her edgy/different sound. Ultraviolence fails to produce any unique and different sounding songs. The album has been completely over-praised by fans and even the most prestigious music critics, likely for her edgy/different sound. Ultraviolence fails to produce any unique and different sounding songs. In fact, the majority of the songs on the album sound almost completely the same and it's often hard at times to distinguish between them. There's been times when I've listened to the album in the background and all of the songs on the album just flow into this same-sounding blur, making you forget you're even listening to anything at all. the only time I think I ever realise I'm listening to the album is at the very end when 'Florida Kilos' plays, which is of a much higher quality to the rest of the sound of the album. I can only hope that Lana listens to the real critics of the album so she can continue to write the timeless classics such as those from her debut album, and so that I can continue to be a fan of her. For some reason, I feel like this is Lana's weakest effort. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good songs on this album, but as a whole, I found myself bored and despite her "new" sound, found Ultraviolence a disappointment.

  1. A shake up in the lyric department would be nice to see next time around, but on this outing Lana Del Rey is able to sell it with striking vocal performances and breathtaking compositions.

While her David Lynch qualities remain, there's also something of the masochistic Lars Von Trier heroine in the resigned drowse of these songs. [Sep 2014, p.92]

Underwhelming ending aside, it’s fair to say that Del Rey (and her collaborators) have more than risen to the challenge of keeping her a part of the pop culture conversation, for all the right reasons.
