It’s a record that captures the anxious state of the world and shows a more fragile Gaz Coombes, far removed from the happy-go-lucky teenager who wrote ‘Caught By The Fuzz’ and ‘Alright’.

This is a highly accomplished and deeply felt third album to add to an already auspicious Gaz Coombes canon. He is on fine form at the moment, undoubtedly one of Britpop’s Strongest Men.

As album closer "Weird Dreams" drifts to its conclusion, it's clear that World's Strongest Man is Coombes' boldest musical statement to date with each song overflowing with hooks and melodies. His urge to challenge himself has paid off on an album that's recognizably him but sounds like nothing he's ever done before.

There’s little here that Coombes doesn’t test the waters of. And though in lesser hands such eclecticism may have felt forced and disjointed, here it’s nothing short of excellent.
  5. Coombes’ vocal, of course, gives the whole thing a nostalgic familiarity, but musically it’s an album that, for him, explores some fresh ground.

This is continuing proof that the 42-year-old Gaz Coombes's best work is happening in the here and now. [May 2018, p.90]

This follow-up goes the whole hog. ... Frank Ocean's Blonde reportedly influenced the tech-driven songwriting process, but there are echoes, too, of U2 at their more exploratory, and, on the twisty-riffed In Waves, last year's QOTSA album. Olympian. [Jun 2018, p.110]

A bold, brisk, rather beautiful zip through multiple pop genres. [Jun 2018, p.26]

Overall, World's strongest Man is a winning combination of the familiar and the peculiar and is worth a listen for fans of nuanced pop rock with seductive grooves. [Mar - May 2018, p.51]

Like so many records of 2018, it is clearly cut together on computer, with dense rhythms competing with smooth surfaces--but also not chasing pop trends. Instead, it's a mature modern album, one filled with questions but also curiously settled, a combination that makes World's Strongest Man more rewarding with each listen.

Gaz’s third solo offering continues to find him moving into his next phase with real class.

Here, the former Supergrass leader is so busy trying to prove something with his lofty themes and overreaching stylisation, that all of the magic is lost.

Utter brilliance! Stumbled upon this album well after its release, it deserved more publicity when it was released.
