As usual, Petty makes it seem easy. And with help from his fellow Mudcrutchers, the unassumingly titled 2 is proof that even Tom Petty’s modest side projects are better and more compelling than many acts at their best.

2 stands as yet another superb showcase of songwriting and musicianship from a beloved icon.

The new album is as fiery and romantic as a youthful tryst, a rock ’n’ roll experience unsullied by the inevitable passage of time and unspoiled by the burden of experience.

A looser, more causal and countrified LP than a formal Heartbreakers release, these longtime friends use Mudcrutch to have some fun, jam out and exude a little bit of that old-fashioned Laurel Canyon psyche-twang sound. [No. 132, p.57]

2 picks up where the debut left off, with trace elements of Southern swampiness mingling with sun-kissed West Coast mellowness.

While it can’t match the last, extremely impressive Heartbreakers set, Hypnotic Eye, it’s a strong country-rock presentation from what’s not quite the sultan of side projects but rather more than Petty’s return-to-roots Tin Machine.

Not everything hits the mark. [Aug 2016, p.98]

    The Best album Of 2016:

Mudcrutch 2 is a fantastic album. The opening two tracks "Trailer" and "Dreams Of Flying" are two of Petty's best songs ever. The album is produced immaculately, and the arrangements are often breathtaking, like on "Beautiful Blue". This time, Petty hands the microphone to each of his fellow bandmates, the results are solid and add diversity, making Mudcrutch 2 feel like a true band effort. I also absolutely love the closing track "Hungry No More" which sounds like a late-60s voodoo-tinged Stones track. I can't wait to see what Tom Petty comes out with next.

Where Mudcrutch 1 went down easy, with a fairly uniform southern folk rock ramble, 2 mixes things up a bit with some more stylistic diversity.Where Mudcrutch 1 went down easy, with a fairly uniform southern folk rock ramble, 2 mixes things up a bit with some more stylistic diversity. My one major critique: I Forgive It All stops the momentum dead (not to say it's a bad song, it's actually a great song), then the rest feels like a scramble to regain it. It's not as consistent a listen as 1, but damned if there aren't gems. Expand
