Sep 12, 2014Another Language’ opener ‘New Topia’ is quite starkly different to their early work, losing much of the dark overtones in favour of a gentle build and furious, ecstatic release. From a distance, it’s the kind of no-holds-barred heavy rock sound that Mogwai made their own, but This Will Destroy You take it a step further, pushing the whole recording into distortion.

Sep 12, 2014The gorgeous and haunting ending leaves more than a few questions unanswered, and begs listeners to play the album again from the start to seek them out once more.
-
Sep 30, 2014If this is post-rock, it’s in the purest sense of that prefix: it’s rock that goes beyond expectations for the genre, even while working within its confines, to somewhere that you sense its players aren’t quite accustomed to yet.

Sep 12, 2014Another Language is another good record that takes some risks, some more successful than others.

Nov 6, 2014You might find yourself wishing the band's music would spiral hellward at least once, but when the quartet hits its mark--burly "War Prayer," dramatic "Invitation," and majestic "New Topia"--it hits hard, stirring emotions like the soundtrack composers with whom the band should be competing in the first place.

Sep 23, 2014At times it's quite boring, but at times it's very good.

Oct 8, 2014For the most part, This Will Destroy You finds its footing on the slow burn, crawling along at a snail’s pace, rarely straying from an established formula (quiet, brooding intro, slow build/hard dynamic shift half to three quarters of the way through, louder still) that, over the course of a whole album, can be somewhat draining.
