Just pitiful stuff sadly, Davis has no feel for writing engaging compositions or meaty hooks, even the vocal melodies are lacking here which is a surprise. Sure we all guessed this would be a lot less aggressive, a lot more goth/The Cure but no one guessed this would end up quite so aimless and flat. Lots of pretty instrumentation with nothing to hold onto.

Davis' voice doesn't match with any of the styles he chose for this album. The songwriting is bad. The album is boring and uninspired. The only good song is What It Is which could, perfectly, be a song for a Korn album.

His debut solo album edges away from Korn's clattering, downtuned noise. What is unexpected is just how far from the mothership he's travelled--and how good the result is. [Jun 2018, p.88]

Oftentimes, Davis dips his toes into this new realm of instrumentation, only to return to his heavy comfort blanket, twisted riffs drowning out any tentative experiments. You can’t help but wonder just how interesting Black Labyrinth could have been if he only dove a little deeper.

Black Labyrinth is an interesting, if flawed distraction from this icon--though it doesn't justify a 10-year wait. [26 May 2018, p.53]
