His debut solo album edges away from Korn's clattering, downtuned noise. What is unexpected is just how far from the mothership he's travelled--and how good the result is. [Jun 2018, p.88]

Emotionally effective but quite different from anything he's done prior, it's an endearing, rewarding peek into Davis' interests outside of his day job.

Themes of anguish and otherness are littered in Davis’s frequently cliched lyrics, though some listeners will welcome such lyrical clarity.

Oftentimes, Davis dips his toes into this new realm of instrumentation, only to return to his heavy comfort blanket, twisted riffs drowning out any tentative experiments. You can’t help but wonder just how interesting Black Labyrinth could have been if he only dove a little deeper.

Black Labyrinth is an interesting, if flawed distraction from this icon--though it doesn't justify a 10-year wait. [26 May 2018, p.53]

Stale songwriting and (mercifully) brief track durations birth forth mind-numbing verses and uninteresting choruses that repeat all too often, in all too predictable configurations. With such uninspired material to work with, it's difficult to conjure an emotion either side of ambivalent, neither to exalt nor to condemn.

Jonathan has obviously decided to experiment on this album and as we all know, not all experiments end well. However, this one does. Each songJonathan has obviously decided to experiment on this album and as we all know, not all experiments end well. However, this one does. Each song has its own unique feeling. This is my favourite album of 2018 so far. Although there are few songs that carry a certain resemblance of Korn, don't expect much similarity. Approach this album with an open mind and let your imagination run wild.
Personal favourites: "What It Is / Basic Needs / Final Days / Gender / Walk On By / What You Believe"

Least inspired song is What It Is, sounds like a throwaway Korn song (which should tell you how bad the song is). Otherwise, an interesting listen, if not mildly entertaining. Expand

Davis' voice doesn't match with any of the styles he chose for this album. The songwriting is bad. The album is boring and uninspired. Just pitiful stuff sadly, Davis has no feel for writing engaging compositions or meaty hooks, even the vocal melodies are lacking here whichJust pitiful stuff sadly, Davis has no feel for writing engaging compositions or meaty hooks, even the vocal melodies are lacking here which is a surprise. Sure we all guessed this would be a lot less aggressive, a lot more goth/The Cure but no one guessed this would end up quite so aimless and flat. Lots of pretty instrumentation with nothing to hold onto. Expand
