  1. It's a lean, tight record that takes its time but doesn't dawdle, it has the easy confidence of a pro who knows that he's working at the top of his game.
  2. Only one of these tracks qualifies as obnoxious. The rest are solidly enjoyable commercial country, and there's something to be said for that.
  3. Toby Keith has been writing and playing country music long enough to know every one of its conventions-and how to twist them around.
  4. Keith is nothing if not competent, but seems to have held back from letting fly.
  5. Generally, his songs about the world around him are more vividly distinctive than those dealing with what may be going on within.
  6. Bullets in the Gun is his most scattershot album to date, a jumble of attitudes and tactics. Much of the time Mr. Keith, who has been one of the most underappreciated vocal stylists in country music, is singing without conviction on songs that are mere archetypes and lack any of his signature gestures.
