McGuinness is having a fantastic time on this album, but the try-too-hard attempts at shock value and relatively derivative riffs occasionally detract from what is an otherwise fantastic recontextualization of British alternative rock into older trends.

On Chroma, he's got enough lines in the water that he's bound to get a bite sooner or later.
  3. While it’s often been easy to sum up McGuinness himself with that statement, whether he wants the attention or not Chroma is a forceful enough effort to propel him centre-stage.

What makes a person charming--songwriter or not--is that adaptability to a situation. It’s the sort of malleability we lose as age hardens us or we simply get stuck in our ways. But Eugene McGuinness hasn’t lost it yet.

It’s a more evolved release for sure, and with less it seems Eugene McGuinness can actually achieve more.

If this record feels like a triumph of style over substance, I still like its style.

All in All is simply lovely. The rest of the album isn't always this good, so perhaps only inconsistency is holding back his rise to pop's higher league.

Former Miles Kane sideman McGuinness concocts his fifth solo record with solid powerpop. [Aug 2014, p.96]

A lack of sonic variety and a mild sense of deja vu won't help to advance his cause. [Aug 2014, p.110]

McGuinness’s inclination to throw the kitchen sink at listeners is as fully on display here as it’s ever been, which makes for a pretty busy listen. But it never threatens to get stuck down one track for too long, and that might be the best thing that Chroma has working in its favor.

Chroma strikes a largely upbeat mood, producer Dan Carey foregrounding a McGuinness vocal that's more often irksome than endearing amid the skittering rockabilly beats and lively but derivative soundscapes. [Sep 2014, p.75]
