What makes Painful so eminently approachable after all these years is that it manages to sound like a fully realized, band-defining statement yet unpretentiously off-the-cuff at the same time. It’s a feeling reinforced by the overflow of material available on this reissue.
  2. Dec 2, 2014

Unlike so many reissues of late, the out-takes and demos on Painful genuinely do give an insight into how the record was made, how the band honed their sound and what direction they were headed.

This reissue is a welcome reminder of an album that has never quite gained the classic status it deserves, but despite this the vital ingredient--the intimate feeling at the heart of Painful--remains agelessly undamaged by the passage of time.

Painful itself remains essential listening. The extra tracks add context and plenty of magical moments; fans will be beside themselves.

It's the sense of a nuanced beat group finding their own path beyond Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine that's most compelling. [Feb 2015, p.99]

It all makes a good starting point for anyone intrigued by one of the most consistently experimental indie bands of the last three decades. [Jan 2015, p.139]

Painful carries immense weight at all times, distorted or not. Cunningly titled Extra Painful, this reissue marks the 30th Anniversary of the band and offers futher insights into the Painfull sessions with acoutic, instrumental and unreleased gems on offer.
