For now, it’s hard to know whether ‘…Pt. 1’ is indicative of the overall direction of ‘Fever Dreams’, or merely one facet of it. Either way, it’s the polished sound of Johnny Marr putting his best foot forward.

"All These Days" is an atmospheric skyscraper that recalls '80s indie even if it has a shimmering modern sheen, and "Ariel" offers a slight sense of sweetness to close out an EP that functions as a good teaser for the full album while also working well as its own mini-LP.

The electronic drive and mildly gothic atmospherics of 2018's acclaimed Call The Comet survive, albeit transferred away from songs of Trumpian horror and sci-fi utopia on to tracks about friendship and empathy (Ariel) and staying strong through the pandemic (Spirit Power & Soul). All These Days intrigues. [Jan 2022, p.82]

While there is not much on Fever Dreams Pt. 1 that is daring or new in terms of musical explorations, if you cast aside expectations and judge the music on its own merits, you’ll find a lot to like.

The lead-off track and the single "Spirit Power and Soul" is a tremendous bit of electro-pop, not light as that term would suggest, but weighty with a massive catchy chorus. The guitar happily features prominently and the drum machines compel you to dance. "Receiver" has a super-heavy cinematic riff which starts off the song with Marr singing all out. The appealing post-punk guitars and Marr's low, sexy vocals make this song a favorite. Side 2 starts with "All These Days" - to my mind, the song that most recalls "Call the Comet" - a very Magazine-like vibe with chorus-laden guitars and heavy drums and bass. The poignant chorus makes this one grip your heart. The last song "Ariel" features another soaring chorus and soothing background vocals from Meredith Sheldon. The dreamy coda is a fitting end to the EP. An auspicious start to the upcoming double album! Expand
