Not listening to the album should be a crime.

The artistry in the record is beyond everything we've listened from Swift since she crossed over from country to pop music some years ago. Here she goes back to her roots by creating music the best way she knows how to: by herself, with minimal instrumentals and pure inspiration.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Folklore has been lauded for its lyricism and while it is true that we are taken through a rich web of carefully placed metaphors and vocabulary, it being stripped back and positioned as a folk/alternative/indie(?) album means that Swift's on-the-nose writing tendencies are brought more starkly to the listeners attention. Taking 'mirrorball' as an example, as one redditor put it:

    "
    'I want you to know
    I'm a mirrorball
I'll show you every version of yourself tonight
I'll get you out on the floor
    Shimmering beautiful
And when I break, it's in a million pieces'

It's like ... yup! you explained how a mirrorball works very comprehensively, figuratively and quite literally. thank you! a little more tell than show, like an english class essay."

One can't help but contrast Folklore to other albums in the space, for example Phoebe Bridger's Punisher, released only a month prior, which paints pictures using a collage of astute observations and stand alone metaphors that the listener must ruminate on before any meaning becomes clear. That's not to say that Swift's lyrics are not pleasing, they just feel more like musical theatre, where it is important that plot points are not missed, than an indie album. The lyrics of 'betty' and 'the last great american dynasty' feel the most naturally suited to the style of their music; both are outwardly telling a story with the former sounding like it wouldn't be out of place on a country album including Swift's own Fearless. Incidentally, these are two of my favourites on the album. I find this little run in tlgad particularly delightful:

'The wedding was charming, if a little gauche
There's only so far new money goes
They picked out a home and called it "Holiday House"
Their parties were tasteful, if a little loud
The doctor had told him to settle down
It must have been her fault his heart gave out
    '

My personal, replay-17-times-in-a-row favourites, though, are the ones that, though probably based on fictitious scenarios, feel the most gut-wrenchingly honest and vulnerable: 'this is me trying' and 'hoax'. "Gut-wrenchingly honest and vulnerable" is, really, the quality that has always separated Taylor from her peers. Even in her endeavours to produce the perfect pop song and the feeling, particularly in her latest albums, that she /really wants us to know certain things/ (e.g. heavy handed references to alcohol - we get it Taylor, you're not a squeaky clean country girl anymore), there is no pop star we believe is showing us their real life more than Taylor Swift. Folklore has proven that it goes even further: there is no pop star we want to hear stories from more than Taylor Swift.

Swift proves yet again that she is a force to be reckoned with.

Stand out tracks, include; "the 1", " "exile (feat. Bon Iver)", "mirrorball", "august", and "betty". The opening track was surprising, as it didn't seem to match with what I had in mind of this being a soft, acoustic-driven album, but ultimately I found it enjoyable. "exile" which features artist Bon Iver was also a fantastic track. Iver adds another layer of depth and the harmonies work very well. I would be confident to say that without Bon Iver this song would be baseless. "betty" is a great track and taken from the perspective of a character woven into the album. It is a real blast from the past with an acoustic guitar and harmonica, giving a true folklorist vibe.

However, even though a majority of the songs are exceptional, others are forgettable. If I were to critique this album, I would say that Swift tries to be deeply profound and poetic about situations that aren't in dire need of it (see; "cardigan", "illicit affairs"). Going off the album title, folklore tells stories passed down through history. However, when these stories are so deep and layered with mystery, the messages and meanings behind each story are lost.

Honing into specific songs, include; "the last great american dynasty", which tells the story of the woman who previously owned Swift's Rhode Island home, Rebekah. The lyrics and melody are nothing to fuss about and then in the bridge, we find out who Rebekah actually is and the song makes sense. The issue is, once I found out who Rebekah was I was done with the song and it didn't pique my interest to tell the story, nor hear it again.

"seven" seems to be enjoyed by a majority of people. I agree that the nostalgia of being young hits close to home, it is the breathiness and odd projection of Swift's vocals that irritate me. The vocals seem strained and forced, making it hard to listen through and through. "peace" and "hoax" the final two respective tracks on the album are... I don't know. I really don't know. This is alarming as most of Swift's closing tracks have been some of the standouts of each of her albums.

Ultimately, I conclude that the album is good, but could have been better executed.

Na chwilę obecną do gustu przypadły mi: the 1, cardigan, exile, my tears ricochet, mad woman. Całość: 7/10

In this album the songs are very cohesive and it contains a sound audio that is nice to hear, however I still prefer Taylor with her songs more "pop".

    Beautiful but forgettable.

It has nowhere near the staying / streaming power that here previous albums have, but it's not a *bad* album - I just don't think it meets the bar she has previously set.

Taylor took a completely different direction here. It wasn't a bad decision, but after at least 3 listens, you can fall asleep to this album.

The direction this took after the high energy, slightly boring album Lover was great. The versatility of styles Swift can pull off is amazing. The direction this album takes is quite great. It starts off as a piano ballad with a variety of songs with different stories of their own. The stories behind each of Swift's songs is always amusing. Cardigan is a great song that gives that feeling of nostalgia and being young. The Last Great American Dynasty tells the story of this rich woman who the town hated, and whos holiday house was bought by Swift. What a trivial idea that was pulled off well.

The second section of the album, the middle, fades into a more aesthetic and ambient theme, and happens to be my favourite part. The song August sounds so beautiful, I wish the bridge section was a bit better.

The end of the album definitely falls off quite a bit. The song "Mad Woman" just is boring. It adds nothing to the album and I wish it wasn't there. Invisible String just doesn't fit the theme the album was going for. Epiphany is quite boring. Betty stands out at the end as a fun song that fits the album's concept though.

This album had great parts and boring parts, songs like Mirrorball, August, Cardigan, Seven, and Exile are amazing and make the album great, but songs like Mad Woman, Epiphany, Invisible Strings, and My Tears Ricochet are quite boring. Good album though.

Unluckily, I'm not really fascinated by this album. There are amazing tracks such as The 1, The Lakes, illicit affairs and betty, I still recommend this album to everyone, the lyrics are spectacular (but we all know this even before the release of the album)

    Overlong and repetitive.

A redundant set of songs that would have been considered average for a first-time singer, gets elevated to the level of a masterpiece for being from Taylor Swift.

But as a longtime listener of all three, this is a disappointing album. Dessner recycles his recent tropes from the last couple Ntl records and Big Red Machine, Bon Iver's sleep apnea would probably sound amazing and Taylor sings her tired phrasing style over this ultimately bland affair. Mirrorball, This Is Me Trying, Seven, and one or two other tracks rise above the rest, but after a few spins, I dare say I will be filing this on the shelf with Lover and Reputation as records that don't quite reach the heights of 1989, a near masterpiece. It's not that these are bad songs, so much as they are the same stuff all three artists are doing, with a Swift-sized budget. Listen to Light Years, Heavenfaced, Hairpin Turns or Dark Side of The Gym by the National to get a sense of what I mean. And Dessner's new song with Michael Stipe---the guy is a brilliant artist but hoo boy is he on auto-pilot. As is this album. Expand

Parece como si hubiera sacado Daylight, Afterflow, The Archer, It’s Nice to Have a Friend y las hubiera copiado y pegado para ponerlas primero.

A modern-folk masterpiece which finds her moving from her previous pop bangers into stunningly simple yet sharp melodies, ‘folklore’ will be going down in Swiftie history as one of her most unexpected, and undoubtedly one of her best.

These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
