All Tiny Creatures will probably play second fiddle to Volcano Choir for the foreseeable future, but the group shows that Collections Of Colonies Of Bees has a deeper bench than anyone probably realized.

That sense of focus on making emotionally redolent material, and keeping the overall thrust of the project in view despite having many hands on the tiller, are ultimately what makes Harbors solidify into a satisfyingly cohesive whole.

Starting with a breezy, uptempo song that's part motorik zone, part kicking it on a relaxed afternoon, Harbors finds All Tiny Creatures in engaging mood throughout, letting the music convey most of whatever message Thomas Wincek and his numerous collaborators and bandmates might have.

That one caveat aside, Harbors is an intricate and catchy set of songs, one that truly earns the name "album" with its cohesion and skillful movement. Rarely does music this meticulous also sound so effortless and, more importantly, so damned joyful.

Things get ponderous when themes aren't fully developed, "Triangle Frog" never leaving intro mode, but all is forgiven when the dreamy guitar hum of "Plankton March" brings Harbors in for an analgesic landing.

Harbors feels mannered, genteel even; the aesthetic is humanness within mechanical complexity, as the jet wings, lungs, and eye on the album art suggest.
