It’s a rare skill to be both silly and devastatingly tender, and it’s all here to revel in.

There is both a braggadocios confidence and an honest humility across all of If My Wife New I’d be Dead, a masterfully created dichotomy that is at the center of everything that CMAT creates.

“If My Wife New I’d Be Dead” is a fully formed debut, replete with big choruses, imaginative song ideas, and enough charm to carry the album’s almost one-hour running time.

The home-brewed spectacle of this album makes it easy to visualize CMAT tackling bigger stages in the future. It's a witty and thoroughly delightful debut.

CMAT is a pop tour de force who knows exactly who she wants to be and has all the talent to deliver it.

Five minutes in her personal company would likely be exhausting, but for this album's duration her brain salad music is fantastical. [Apr 2022, p.82]

It all works together, amping up the winking, cheeky side of country while also showing CMAT to be an artist enthralled by the genre but not beholden to it.
  8. This record offers a maelstrom of mistakes and confusion and glee and love and loneliness and hope – and the mess of it all makes for the biggest gift.

If My Wife New I’d Be Dead is a promising debut from an artist who certainly knows how to craft a tune.

For a country tinged pop singer, CMAT sounds unlike anything else knocking around the airwaves at the moment. Across 50 minutes and 12 songs,For a country tinged pop singer, CMAT sounds unlike anything else knocking around the airwaves at the moment. Across 50 minutes and 12 songs, the listener bounces through a feast of melodies and some of the funniest lyrics you'll hear all year. In some ways this record reminds me of some of Father John Misty's best work. The fusion of cleverness and melody, darkness masquerading underneath the pop hood. "Every Bottle (Is My Boyfriend)" is an encapsulation of the album in a track. Well worth checking this out if you like quirky yet high quality pop music. Top marks for uniqueness. Full Review »
