UncutApr 3, 2013The results may lack the stamp of originality, but the likes of "Silver Living," "Giving Out," and "I Know It's You" are vibrant, brimful of melody and lots and lots of fun. [May 2013, p.71]

Apr 24, 2013A few tracks towards the end of In Guards We Trust will maybe sound better once you’ve fully absorbed the single fodder of the record, but the psychedelic moments of ‘Your Man’ just don’t hit the spot for me as they may for fans of later MGMT noise.

MojoMay 20, 2013Enjoyable, but the signposting towards "the good bits" can be a tad too obvious. [Jun 2013, p.86]

Apr 29, 2013While not remotely original--the unabashed attempt to salvage the last remains of anthemic indie-rock music is admirable in itself.
-
Apr 3, 2013At its best, In Guards We Trust is terrific fun--a bold break from the cynicism and detachment that characterizes too much of the band’s native city. But a few more careful edits might have kept the record from blowing its gasket by side B.

Apr 3, 2013At best, the verses, bridges, and instrumental passages feel custodial, doing little to disturb the flow so that the chorus can deliver a proper dynamic boost. Mostly, they just feel like Guards killing time, and Follin's power-pop Madlibs make the 45 minutes of In Guards We Trust feel significantly longer.
-
Apr 3, 2013Too often, though, the band just sounds like washed-out pop, with melodies that don’t really stick and not enough rawk to have much edge.

Apr 3, 2013The generalized lyrics shrouded in reverb protect Richie by rendering anything he sings as essentially useless.
