Effortlessly mixing gangsta rap, lascivious odes to pimping, and underground-style consciousness, Kamikaze feels eclectic without stooping to demographics-pandering, though its contradictory elements create a few jarring moments.
-
Theres plenty of impressive tongue-twisting here, but as the re-working of Feel So Good illustrates, hes even more impressive when he slips down a gear to work the ladies.
-
Twista here proves that he's a big dog, worthy of major-league status, officially escaping the label of novelty act.
-
Twista still manages to steal the limelight on hot booty-busters like "Slow Jamz" and "Pimp On."
-
BlenderOver the course of an entire album Twista's gift proves his curse: Uniterrupted, it can get taxing. [Mar 2004, p.129]
-
VibeOutside the beats, the other surprise of Kamikaze is Twista's more worldly and thoughtful subject matter. [Mar 2004, p.184]
-
It's overlong, like almost every rap album today, and it's not the sort of place to come expecting erudition or insight. But for one singular rapper unwilling and unafraid to stick to his guns, it's a deeply satisfying record.
-
The good humor and easier tempos also make Twistas forays into Guinness World Record speed more effective, even if manic window-rattlers like Kill Us All seem a bit predictable once youve heard his latest, slowed-down twist.
-
Obviously, Twista's not breaking down any walls with his wordplay on Kamikaze, but along the way he kicks over a few garbage cans while letting Kanye West, Toxic and the rest of his production crew move some crowds and elevate their status, one slow jam at a time.
