    There's a ton of wild, riotous energy to Nattesferd, but it's a little more cleanly delineated rather than roped together and blurred around the edges. It's a shake-up rather than a clear evolution, but it's a productive one.

    Kvelertak reach further back on their epic third album Nattesferd, which sounds more like 2016 metal rode a time machine back to the ‘70s and ‘80s to see what blood-curdling shrieks could do for the likes of bar-band glam and proggy power-metal.

    One of the things I love about Kvelertak is that among their face-melting riffs and songs, there are also surprises. These guys know how toOne of the things I love about Kvelertak is that among their face-melting riffs and songs, there are also surprises. These guys know how to play hard and fast, but they're also hook masters, giving a nod back to the roots metal they obviously grew up listening to. On Nattesferd, those dad rock sensibilities are even more at the forefront. There are times that the album ventures directly into the land of "feel good," most notably on tracks like 1985 and Bronsegud. That said, it's all blended with their signature style of heavy, along with their inclination to veer into punk styles as well.

    The result is an album that plays like a classic metal record. There are peaks and valleys, lots of diversity and some brilliant surprises along the way. It's still 100% Kvelertak, but it's also clear that they're a band that continues to find themselves by exploring a more dynamic range of sounds. It's easily one of, if not the best, metal albums of the year.    … Expand
