    As a collected album, No Fun Mondays is a bit of a lark, unexpected in its energy but not its contents. With two notable exceptions, Billie Joe Armstrong chose tunes that stay well within his punk-pop and power pop wheelhouse.

    I think this record has to be taken in isolation and taken in context of needed something to do during the pandemic. But regardless, No Fun Mondays is a pop-rocking good time.

    There are some bangers that you’ll know, such as ‘Manic Monday’, which was written by Prince for The Bangles, whose singer Susanna Hoffs lends some warm guitar and vocals to match Armstrong’s silky sentimental side. It’s the perfect soundtrack to lazily whiling away the monotony of quarantine.

    No Fun Mondays is a project of covers completed by the Green Day singer/guitarist, Billie Joe Armstrong. Since the trio’s 2020 album “Father Of All…”, they have said that they will be most likely shying away from full albums and producing more singles. A while after Father Of All… was released, the first single came out, and a pattern was formed that another track was released every one to two weeks until the entire 14-song project was completed. Instead of originals however, No Fun Mondays is different because it consists of covers of songs released decades ago. As a result, I tried to pay less attention to the quality of the lyrics (as Armstrong has no control over other artists’ lyric ability) and focus more on the actual music. For the most part, the punk band does a good job of giving these oldies but goodies a new sound that sounds totally Green Day. I wish I could give my entire song-by-song commentary, but that would go a frustratingly small bit beyond the character limit. Overall, this was a great attempt at a cover album. It must not have been easy to convert all of these to pop rock, but a good number of them ended up working pretty well. It was nice that Green Day decided to return; as they are one of my favorite bands, I was fearful that we would not get a lot of content after their latest. As a whole, I was pleased with No Fun Mondays and I would recommend it to Green Day fans. People who enjoyed Green Day’s previous four or five albums will like this outing. Highlights: I Think We’re Alone Now, Manic Monday, That Thing You Do!, Amico, Kids in America, Not That Way Anymore, That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, and A New England.    … Expand
