The sense on this wondrous and haunting album is that he's a man and a songwriter that lives to command life and forge new ways forward, disproving the merits of convention by simply reflecting upon how falling in line is not for him and, damn it, it won't have to be for his family neither.

It's a powerful chapter in Bachmann's expansive discography, and while it might require a closer listen than some of his earlier material, the rewards are as fulfilling and slow burning as the songs themselves.

Soft, ragged, and bruised, Bachmann will always deal in the losing situations of life but seems to have conjured some rays of light here that make those moments seem more livable.

Lyrically, he hasn't lost the Archer's edge--the sonic tenderness through which such sentiments are conveyed, however, is reflective of a wisdom that comes with hindsight and forgiveness. [Oct 2018, p.24]

With the limited orchestration and a folk-rock approach, Bachmann creates a surprisingly rich sound, his textures rolling across the album coherently if a little too comfortably.
