What is this derivative, inane garbage? And why do most people seem to like it? I am baffled. This kind of music was boring 20 years ago. Now it's just offensive.

Ohm-an this album is weak:( Can’t tell the difference between any song and the vocals are predictable and boring with very few dynamics like quiet loud contrasts or rhythmic changes. Every track the vocal formula is verses of eat the mic talk singing and screaming. Then for the chorus the drums and guitars go into a repetitive chord or note strummed over and over, same drum rhythm with dreamy vocals over the top. You know the ones I’m talking about “blahhhhhh-blah-blah-bee-boo-blah-eee-ahhhhhhh”. They were interesting on Koi No Yokan but this time around they don’t have any discernible melody or thing to hang your hat on. The guitars are drenched in so many effects you can’t hear Carpenters riffs super muddy production. You might say this is a Deftones classic formula or sound but this seriously sounds like a generic version of the band trying to copy their style. Added to Apple Music library. Listened through once and immediately Delete from Library. This is the first time I haven’t like a Deftones album. In the meantime I’m leaning on Car Bomb or Youth Code for something hard and cutting edge. I’m sure the next one will be better. Expand

Is Ohms the return to form that meets expectations? Well, yes, even if the tunes haven't changed so much as the vastly-superior production has (with producer Terry Date back into the fold). But it also reinforces the fact that Deftones have stuck to a back-to-basics formula through all these years; the only difference now being that everyone else is taking notice.

It's at times crushingly heavy, but there's a cerebral knottiness to the arrangements, and Chino Moreno's vocal boasts a windswept melancholy harking back to the new romantics. [Dec 2020, p.29]

Arguably, Ohms is at first blush nothing new for Deftones. What it is is an engrossing refinement of what they’ve become over years of risk-taking and experimentation.
