On Sunset will not be remembered as Weller's most immediate record, or the most musically even, but it's certainly one of the most rewarding, and powerful. [Jul 2020, p.76]

You’d have a hard time arguing that On Sunset doesn’t work as an album, held together not just by its overriding lyrical theme but uniformly strong melodies. As exercises in trying to have your cake and eat it go, it’s pretty impressive.

Weller has found an ideal blend of experience and a quest for more that provides for an optimistic album for an English summer.

It might not be quite the experimental opus you feel Weller’s still holding back, but that feels a churlish complaint when the songs are this well-written. There’s a lightness of touch and a tenderness at ‘On Sunset”s heart.

On Sunset could be viewed as an album reinstating Weller as the keeper of mod musical tradition, but it’s also an album that sees him taking a rare glance into the rear-view mirror as he speeds into the '20s.

This is not the kind of sunset in which mortality looms, but where the gentler evening light casts everything in a fresh aspect. There is warmth and succour here, undercut with a playful scattering of mischievous sounds; orchestral soul with eloquent quirks; nuances that hark back to Weller’s second band, the Style Council.

Weller the elder statesman sounds more invigorated than ever as he cheekily tries every musical trick under the sun.

A brave album, challenging at times but generally a smooth listen. It has a nice blend of experimentalism and solid songwriting. It possibly meanders off without purpose a bit too much for my personal liking. Some of the tracks veer into indulgent jam session territory but the quality is generally kept high. Expand

I met Paul Weller in “True Meanings” (2018), in which he explored a blue and sensible side. The ex-frontman of The Jam and soloist since the 90’s returns with a similar but more energetic and colorful exploration. The essence between “True Meanings” and “On Sunset” is not that different. Maybe the exploration takes a different path, but the Rock produced in this album does not break with stereotypes nor provides innovation to the ears of the public. Although the value is in the upbeat energy and a clear intention to innovate and experiment, Weller appears to have reached his creative limit. Not every essay creates interesting or attractive loops. However, some loops succeed in reassuring Weller's professional side and highlight his intention to add creativity and cleverness to his orchestra. If Weller learns something out of this, his creativity will grow a lot, if not, at least he will have fun composing for the same old public.
