There may be a fan favorite or two missing from the set list, but the selections are excellent overall, and it's nice to have a sample of what they sound like live, whether you've missed them to this point or just want a great-sounding souvenir.
-
UncutCaptures their Tex-Mex boogie at full tilt. [Aug 2005, p.105]
-
FilterAmbitious. [#16, p.88]
-
Out West’s main drawback is pacing; despite being drawn from a trio of sold-out shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco earlier this year, there’s little sense of momentum.
-
This is a good collection of tracks even if the quality of the live-spin isn't quite consistent.
-
Q MagazineThe attention does wander over two CDs... but vigorous renditions of Bring It On and Get Myself Arrested are reminders that Gomez's psych-blues revivalism really was quite special. [Aug 2005, p.128]
-
By keeping the grooves messy, Gomez shortchange the shimmering, Brit-poppy quirks that have made their albums unique.
-
As a live album, Out West is a fair one.
-
The songs could have been chosen more wisely, especially because some significant fan favorites are absent.
-
The first disc actually suggests the band is capable of making a live album worth your time even if you didn't like Bring It On and Liquid Skin, but its welcome is worn out and its charms are fatally undercut by the turgid, unnecessary second disc.
-
For the most part, there is little here to take offense to.
-
Gomez do nothing to rethink or reinvigorate their earlier recordings; in fact, when Out West's renditions are compared to the originals, the live versions sound dull and lifeless.
