It might sound like a cavalcade of cliches on paper, but with punchy couplets and shimmering production, Trey Songz here furthers his reputation an artist head and shoulders above many a lover-man peer.

These missteps ultimately don't really matter at all or change the fact that Passion, Pain & Pleasure is this year's finest release by a major-label male R&B artist.
  3. The album's back half doesn't boast an outlandish moment like "I Invented Sex," either, but it is the strongest, most varied side of a Trey Songz album, just about flawless. It smoothly shifts through several moods.
  4. Songz's speedy delivery splits the difference between rapping and crooning; like Rihanna, he lacks an especially charismatic voice but often uses that trait to his favor.
  5. Notwithstanding a brassy, helium-voiced cameo from Nicki Minaj on the catchy, booze-celebrating "Bottoms Up." Otherwise it's just steady mackin' over dull, airbrushed slow-jams.
