If Outrun was a fast-paced drive that made the city look like an endless stream of light-trails, Reborn is a beautiful retro pastiche that intentionally slows down to let you take in just how far you've come.

Despite the dark aesthetic of ‘Reborn’, the album shines bright with promise for the futuristic vista of Kavinsky.

A collection that future-proofs Kavinsky’s curation of high-end production, addictive earworms and cinematic scope.

Reborn often feels like traveling simultaneously to the past and the future in a larger-than-life overwhelmingness similar to watching a film in IMAX. It’s this complete immersion that wraps the record as a whole, rendering it as exciting as the newest sequel of your favourite superhero series.

‘Zombie’ has all the swagger and pep of his previous collaborator The Weeknd, while the tempered nature of ‘Cameo’ and ‘Renegade’ allow traditional pop songwriting to coexist with bolshy, bone-crunching settings. These fleeting moments are by far ‘Reborn’s most satisfying, and offer proof that there’s plenty more creative road for Kavinsky to bomb it down in years to come.

Vincent Belorgey’s obsession with buffed-up synths and corny lyrics earnestly sung (“Reborn” by Romuald, “Renegade” by Cautious Clay) does pay off, but the air-tight production and endless cascade of saccharine arpeggios – plus a lovesick Sébastien Tellier pining on “Goodbye” – lays on thick the sentimental shtick. I can't believe how much I like this album. I heard some initial complaints that it was a bit slower and less loud than Outrun. So I expectedI can't believe how much I like this album. I heard some initial complaints that it was a bit slower and less loud than Outrun. So I expected a little bit of a letdown. But, it is so many years later since the first album and this sound and vibe just feel appropriate. The genre Kavinsky accidentally created, Synthwave, has been a little stagnant so growth and a little change in direction are necessary. Still, a perfect late-night driving album even if you won't crash your Teterosa with Reborn like you would with Outrun. God, I hope he makes another album! Expand

Quite amazing, actually nothing short of amazing. Such a high quality album, that truly is what it says, after so many years of silence.Quite amazing, actually nothing short of amazing. Such a high quality album, that truly is what it says, after so many years of silence. Would've scored this album 10/10 if it wasn't for Zombie and Outsider being slightly on the weaker side in my opinion. My top 5 would be Plasma, Reborn, Zenith, Cameo and Horizon. Expand
