    There’s far more good to be found on Red Flag than there is bad--this feels like the genuine follow-up to Saints And Sinners that Studio 1 should have been.

    All Saints were never your orthodox pop act, with their luscious, layered songs built on a hybrid of adult themes and girl-group camaraderie. Parts of their fourth album don’t always match up to that former savvy style, however. Experiments with world rhythms sit next to mellow ballads of varying degrees of schmaltz.

    They return to their roots for the addictive ’90s swing of ‘Make U Love Me’ but--frustratingly--after the sultry ‘Summer Rain’ the album quickly slips off piste. ‘Who Hurt Who’ is a wet Disney ballad, while the limp dancehall and incessant pitch-shifting of ‘Ratchet Behaviour’ grates. Third time lucky it might not be, but it’s not a million miles away.

    All Saints might never rise to that exalted company [Everlys, Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas], but there are more than enough reminders on this record that, when they are on, they can still create a sound which few if any of their peers can match.

    Though the first single "One Strike" is probably one of their strongest to date, the rest of the album is a mixed bag of hits and misses. The first five tracks are sheer genius and the album slowly fades into noncommercial territory. Three of the tracks towards the end blend together into one long underachieving ballad.
