  • Summary: The former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer returns after three years with his latest solo album.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 10 out of 13
  2. Negative: 0 out of 13
  1. There's a real fire to his writing here, turning Revival into a missive as immediate, effective, and telling as Neil Young's "Living with War."
  2. This album is not just a revival, but a complete rejuvenation for John Fogerty. It's easily his best solo record, and what makes it so special is that he embraces his swamp-rocking Creedence Clearwater Revival days.
  3. The title Revival is no hype: Fogerty is again in full command of his talent for blending heartfelt writing with irony-free meat-and-potatoes rock.
  4. Fogerty sets high standards for himself and thankfully, he has delivered an album that matches his early solo work.
  5. 80
Reassessing the past and reengaging with the present, Revival lives up to its name.
  6. Like Springsteen's recent return to classic form, the album feels more continuation than reprise.

    It's a solid return. [Nov 2007, p.137]

I thought it was amazing to see John Fogerty make such a strong album. He's over 60, and he sings like he's 30.

It's like listening to an older, more gruff and rugged CCR. And that's definitely a good thing.

A very good disc -- not quite as polished as Blue Moon Swamp, and lacking the pop classics of Centerfield. Fogerty's voice makes it all but impossible to identify his music. No other artist has his intonation and inflection. His voice has Fogerty's voice makes it all but impossible to identify his music. No other artist has his intonation and inflection. His voice has always thrived in songs with a dark, critical edge. Here he has written and recorded a "Fogerty album." As one listens to each track it becomes obvious that no other voice could record them; not without diminishing their power. Gunslinger will become a classic for his fans, and the album a must. This is the kind of album that will make serious rock lovers "Hie de Hie de Hie" for "the old man" is no longer down the road; he is here as fresh and relevant as ever. Expand

I've heard "Don't You Wish It was True?" and I think it's a great tune--but I've yet to hear the whole album. Glowing, I've heard "Don't You Wish It was True?" and I think it's a great tune--but I've yet to hear the whole album. Glowing, glorious reviews abound (as usual) from the banal crowd that must not have a musical appreciation like the rest of us: How many lousy CDs am I supposed to buy on the word of paid-by-the-industry [bad] reviewers all of whom have all their taste in their mouths? I'll buy it after I hear (all of) it. Expand
