Oct 19, 2015You can hear his love and enthusiasm bursting out of these grooves, not just in the way he roars over the top of melody lines but in the spaces he creates for other musicians to shine.
-
Nov 9, 2015Its wider emotional range and stylistic switch-ups, none of which is outside Newman's grasp, give it a slight edge.
-
Nov 16, 2015That’s not to say it isn’t a pretty powerful album with a few moments of greatness buried somewhere beneath. It’s just to say ... come on, man! Get those hands dirty!
-
Oct 19, 2015Newman chews his way through these 11 songs with abandon; you can almost hear him trying to do the splits in gold trousers on the bigger numbers.
-
Oct 19, 2015Greg Kurstin’s frantic production sounds overegged, and the lyrical platitudes (“Something feels kinda special”, “I want to give you more” etc) betray no real personality. Newman’s voice deserves better.
-
Oct 19, 2015Track after track follows the same formula, with Newman’s subdued introductory verse swallowed by a huge, anthemic refrain that never lets up, his voice drowned in a tide of orchestra and chorus, all dialled up to 11. It’s quite frustrating.
