    Technically proficient but emotionally shallow, Schlagenheim too often feels like feeding all mathcore and post-punk into a neural network and releasing the result. For some, that's why they'll love it. ... There's no doubt they'll mature, but for now, their restlessness results in both the most promising and exasperating record of 2019.

    As a whole, Schlagenheim is an imperfect, intriguing debut: behind the overheated prose lurks a young, self-conscious band who clearly aren’t as fully formed as the hype suggests, who are still capable of misdirecting their undoubted talent and haven’t quite clicked that intelligence is best worn lightly in the balance between art and heart. But it’s still early days.

    Excellently crafted, constantly surprising, subdued and cerebral or unobtainable and bombastic.
    Black Midi dropped a classic.
