Whilst there are echoes of the bluster of Florence and the Machine and the minimalist soul of Jessie Ware here, Soft Control is a distinctive take on modern pop and an album with crossover appeal.

Soft Control is an album of neatly constructed soulful pop songs that anyone who likes the artists it references would enjoy.

For an artist who has undergone so many identity experiments before her debut, Soft Control is a promising, if not groundbreaking, beginning.

There is precious little personality to be found on this dry, pedestrian record, which comes across as a selection of yawn-worthy Adele-rejects rather than a cohesive body of work from a singular artist.

Laura Welsh is a very talented songwriter with some great producers behind her - if only Universal had kept a few more of the album's songs under wraps before its release. 'Ghosts' and 'Hardest Part' are, in my opinion, the best songs on the album. Full Review »
