Song Of Co-Aklan is a more than welcome return from a puckish master of social observation and surreal manifesto: “Let’s Flood The Fairground” indeed. It isn’t a consoling album and its humour is biting at best, but as a way of getting through a bruised and confused new spring, it’s the perfect companion. [Apr 2021, p.52]

Song Of Co-Aklan is unlikely to win any fresh converts to Cathal Coughlan, despite it being more commercial than a lot of his output. For those who have fallen under Coughlan’s spell though, there are plenty of new treasures to discover in a fine summation of one of music’s true maverick characters.

It's not the kind of album that you could ever call a classic, in fact it rails against the concept in some ways. It's also unlikely to attract a raft of millennials to the camp. Having said that, Coughlan's first record in a decade is worth the wait and I would expect will go down well with his dedicated fanbase. Expand

I'm 60 year old plus fart who used to follow Microdisney in the late 80's. It's been 10 years since Cathal produced any music. Happy to reportI'm 60 year old plus fart who used to follow Microdisney in the late 80's. It's been 10 years since Cathal produced any music. Happy to report that this album is surprisingly accessible. Mind you it's still pretty angry and Cathal is still one of the greatest male vocalists I have ever heard. Expand
