    Throughout That's What I Heard, Cray's voice is unstoppable. It knows no age and can hit the rafters with the most gut-wrenching testifying imaginable, then drag you through the gutter - or take you to church or the bedroom - with a menacing, sensual growl. That's what I heard, anyway.

    Albums don’t get much more soulful than the Memphis sound the two channeled on Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm, yet this continues in a similar vein, plunging deeper to include not just soul but some deep gospel too.

    At a time when deep Southern soul isn't doing a whole lot better than the blues in the marketplace, Robert Cray is an effective cheerleader for both forms, and That's What I Heard shows that after 40 years of record-making, he's in no way tired or short on ideas and inspiration.

    With the powerful That’s What I Heard, he and Jordan still find ways to broaden, expand and magnify that template without breaking it. Established fans will rejoice in the sheer exuberance, professionalism and variety displayed here. But even those who may have dismissed Cray over the past decade should jump back in and enjoy the ride.

    This album is chicken soup for the soul. Timeless blues, classic Robert Cray. At times brought me back to listening to old blues records fromThis album is chicken soup for the soul. A great break from the craziness of today's world. Poor guy does seem to get cheated on and dumped a lot.… Expand
